It’s now 8yrs since we’ve been seeing pictures of the widows of Vrindavan celebrating Holi among themselves.
But every time the newspaper headlines read as if it’s for the very first time in eternity.
Fighting tradition, bashing patriarchy etc. etc.
However, among families & friends it was much, much earlier. In fact my city bred generation didn’t even know that it was something out of the ordinary.
Similarly, women lighting pyres has been known to us for at least a couple of decades. Daughters, brother & sister together,
mothers, wives with their minor children have taken to the responsibility & quietly broken the norm.
Why is it then that the media amplifies & magnifies anytime a well known female personality performs the ritual as if it’s never been done before,
thus diminishing the unknown woman who has handled the very same moment privately & stoically ?
Also, the misleading media content not only shamelessly milks a private episode but also reduces it to a circus. No service at all to the grief stricken.
Isn’t it time we stopped tom-tomming such occasions as a battle against this or that ?
It ends up as an opportunity to grind axe, voice one’s own pet peeves, expose one’s own unawareness instead of taking it in our stride - as a natural evolution of the times.

Anyone in their 20s cannot be sent to to jail for their crimes because they could be vegan, a climate change activist, mummy to a German Shepherd or pregnant.
Once one crosses 70, the State must be benign enough not to incarcerate for past crimes.

The role of middle aged segment is to enable by remaining
safe & secure in their societal positions.
To wring hands, lament & foist their burden of shame on the rest of us.
Group 1
Mostly quiet BJP supporters.
Reaction -
Not surprised.
Situation was bad, no doubt, but the panic & narrative did seem engineered.
BJP must go after them aggressively.

In addition to our 9 suggestions some of which we have flip flopped over in the past few days & others that are completely unrelated to Covid but dear to our survival -
we have an additional 5 points that we urge you to seriously consider.
Stop Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
We do not want to deal with an literate populace - it is a threat to our way of governance.
Stop Swacch Bharat campaigns.
It is contrary to the Idea of India.
Why do you think we did nothing about open defecations for 70 yrs ?
Remember Demonetisation ?
They said -
Look at the poor ! How they suffer ! They are dying standing in queues. You snatched their livelihood !
While they gnashed their own teeth seeing their box beds, lockers, garbage & gunny bags of cold cash turn to cinder.
Remember Migrant Labour ?
They said -
Look at the poor ! How they suffer ! They will die on their trek back home. The lockdown is brutal. You snatched their livelihood !
While they cut off their electricity, stopped water tankers, hoping they’d leave taking the virus with them.
And during this crisis that has engulfed us.
We have heard -
Look at the poor ! How they suffer ! The system is broken.
With no ‘friends in the right places’ they are begging for beds, gasping for oxygen.
Delhi accustomed to Mughal architecture also known as the Architecture Of The Dead, quietly accepted post-Independence acres of prime land dedicated to the dead of one Dynasty - believing this to be the unquestioned right of Rulers.
After all, our Capital is dotted with
mausoleum after mausoleum built by Kings during their lifetimes, for themselves.
And today, in the midst of a Pandemic, that has hit every aspect of our lives & our economy in its gut, peddlers & dealers of the Great Indian Fairy Tale History have actually risen up,
BUT to ask the wrong questions.
To infer the connection between vaccines, hospitals, availability of oxygen with the Central Vista Project is either an embarrassing ignorance of how budgetary allocations are made, or its vile agenda-driven drivel - yet again.
