High Level Address by Former President Jacob Zuma at #Nkandla:
Greetings to members of the media gathered here. Thanks for ensuring that people across the globe can hear my views on the Kampempe judgment that sentenced me to jail without trial
Please allow me to thank all peace loving people who’ve shown support to me and the rule of law & justice.
I must also hastened to acknowledge & appreciate the Con Court for it’s recent announcement…
Regarding them granting me an opportunity.
I trust that the peace loving people and the Con Court will ensure that the Constitution will reign supreme.
I agree with the Con Court that democracy was due to the lives that were lost.
Constitutional democracy should mean that no one not even judges are above the law & it’s clear that any act against the constitution is null & void.
It’s against this background that I applauded the monitory judgment that was fair & objective
The minority judgment was clear and prohibits detention without trial.
1. Contrary to the main stream narrative & propaganda against me, I’ve never refused to appear before the #StateCaptureInquiry
It’s my honest view that my past relationship with #JudgeZondo led to him treating me with unfairness & bias.
It doesn’t make sense to refer to the Commission to the #ZondoCommission
…
What happens if something happens to him or his family is implicated and have to appear before him.
I told #JudgeZondo that he is not neutral & he ruled that his own submission is victorious
This meant that I was forced to appear before someone I have accused of bias and conflict of interest.
As things stand right now, that issue is being adjudicated in a court of law & im still awaiting outcome of that court
Ad #JudgeZondo recused himself & allowed someone to hear me in a neutral forum, people of South Africa would have heard my submissions.
All I’m asking for is fairness and consistency.
I’m not the 1st person to not want to appear at the #StateCaptureInquiry with valid reasons.
This shouldn’t be construed as me not respecting the commission.
The commission responds to others differently
Some of those include prominent names in the private decor who didn’t get subpoenas.
Even the Con Court was inconsistent in a whole range of issues including life & death matters on direct access but granting direct access elsewhere
The fact that I was given a sentence without trial should endure a sense of shock to those who cherish the rule of law.
The rule of law doesn’t mean dealing with those harshly because you don’t like them
I’m concerned that South Africa is going back to apartheid and there’s detention without trial.
#AceMagashule is facing a banning order. Level 4 and lockdown is akin to a state of emergency
I believe in the Rule of law, if fought & went to prison & exiled so that there’s the rule of law.
No person can accuse me of being against the rule of law
Consistent with this, I’m pursuing legal means to approach this matter.
I’ve been in & out of court for the past 20yrs & attended same except when Doctors advised otherwise
Everyone was shocked when #JudgePillay issued a warrant of arrest against me when I was sick.
#JudgePillay was also the same one on the Majority judgment. Thus unfair
Finally, I’m not scared of going to jail for my beliefs.
It’ll not be the 1st time but I’ll be a prisoner of my conscience and beliefs.
I have a duty & obligation to ensure that the respect of our…
Justiciary isn’t compromised & reminding one of apartheid.
I call my supporters to use peaceful means to protest against this injustice.
I’m not asking for sympathy but justice
My health, and age were not considered when mitigation was decided.
These injustices need to be exposed. If it was up to me, I’d once again go to jail as early as today whether I come out alive or not but I’ve never operated as an individual…
But I’m guided by views of my family and comrades.
I thank my legal team of going the extra mile to challenge these injustices.
Even serious criminals are granted an opportunity to mitigate before sentencing
In my case, I was asked to mitigate before I was found guilty.
There can’t be Zuma Laws in South Africa
Sending me to jail during the height of a pandemic at my age, is the same as sentencing me to death.
The death sentence was declared unconstitutional in South Africa in 1995 as a result of my own & other sacrifices.
