For those looking to photograph Fireworks tonight follow these easy steps and you should get pretty good results (the steps mentioned will apply to consumer grade to professional DSLR's and Mirrorless cameras with manual settings). #FourthofJuly
First you will need the following.
- A DSLR or Mirrorless Camera capable of manual controls.
- A Tripod
- A cable release, or a wireless cable release, or app control of the camera using your phone.
Next get into location and set up your camera on the tripod and frame your image. I would recommend getting to the location as early as possible to get the best spot to frame your photos, and so you have a little light left to compose your images.
Once the camera is set up, set your camera to the following settings.
- Aperture F/11
- ISO 200
- Shutter Speed Bulb
- Turn off Autofocus and focus the camera manually to infinity.
With Bulb being your shutter speed, that allows you the photographer to manually keep the shutter open, so long as you hold down the shutter release button.
The shutter closes the minute you let go of the button.
You'll want a shutter release cable, or a wireless remote, or app control for this however, as using the button on the camera will create micro vibrations that may cause your image to not be as sharp.
Once you hear the firework fire into the air, hold the shutter release down and keep it held until after the fire work explodes.
You can also hold longer or shorter depending on if you want other fireworks to be shown in the image.
Lastly, keep shooting away, if you don't nail it on the first try, just keep going and keep trying. A single or a handful of good frames is better then nothing at all.
Here's my results using everything I mentioned above, photographing the #Chicago fireworks display last night.
This was shot on a Nikon Z6II with a 24-70 F/2.8 lens (the F-Mount version using the adapter).
A few tips to successes.
1) Practice today with everything I mentioned above before the show. Make mistake and learn at home, not in the field while things are going on. 2) Photograph in RAW mode, so that there's more information for you to edit and get the best image possible.
3) Feel free to recompose your image while the show is going. 4) Finally compose your image with objects in the foreground (like buildings, people, trees, a lake...ect.) to make you're images more interesting. Fireworks alone in the night sky isn't that interesting.
Hopefully these tips work for you and happy shooting! #FourthofJuly
