We detail the realities of this vast expansion of state power: secret trials, unlawful prosecutions and fines, protest bans, censorship, and more.⤵️

We detail how:

➡️ 920 pieces of legislation have now been passed in the UK containing the word ‘coronavirus'

➡️Councils have issued £multi-million Covid marshal contracts, up to to 2022-3

➡️Officials have built capacity to conduct 10,000 home visits a day for travel quarantine
➡️Approx. 120,000 Covid fines issued since March 2020

➡️There's increasing disparity in fines issued, with Asian + black people disproportionately fined

➡️Police even issued a 19yo a £10,000 Covid fine for arranging a memorial for a 17yo who had died of suicide.
➡️ Approx. 20% of lockdown prosecutions were unlawful

➡️100% of Coronavirus Act prosecutions (286) unlawful

➡️4,000+ prosecutions have been under the closed-door Single Justice Procedure, where over 90% of people didn't enter a plea. Some don't even know they're being trialled.
We also look ahead to new proposals, such as worrying plans for mandatory vaccinations for certain workers.

We've made 17 recommendations for Parliamentarians to pursue and we've sent a copy to all MPs & Peers.

⚖️ We are calling on @RobertBuckland to:

1. Review all prosecutions heard under the Single Justice Procedure in relation to emergency Covid laws.

2. Commit to scrapping the use of the Single Justice Procedure for Covid charges.
The Single Justice Procedure means people are being convicted + fined under confusing Covid laws in secretive 'trials' without meaningful oversight or review.

It is likely that hundreds of people have been wrongly convicted under this process.

⚠️TOMORROW⚠️

@ECHR_CEDH will deliver its final judgment on the UK intelligence service's bulk interception of communications, disclosed by @Snowden in 2013.

We brought the challenge alongside @OpenRightsGroup | @Amnesty | @privacyint | @libertyHQ | +other trusted rights groups.
Disclosures by @Snowden revealed that GCHQ was conducting “population-scale” interception, capturing the communications of millions of innocent people.

The mass spying programmes included:

❌ TEMPORA, a bulk data store of all internet traffic;
❌KARMA POLICE, a catalogue including a “web browsing profile for every visible user on the internet”;

❌Black Hole, a repository of over 1 trillion events including internet histories, email and instant messenger records, search engine queries and social media activity

🚨 A major milestone today as #lockdown eases for most of the UK.

#EmergencyPowers are still being used to clamp down on protesters, with 4 arrested on suspicion of breaching Health Protection Regulations this weekend.

And the #CoronavirusAct remains in force, although all 270 charges under the Act have been unlawful.

Today, NHS App users can create a "2D barcode" to show their Covid vaccine status using their NHS number, name and COVID vaccination history.

While right now this will only be used for some international travel, later this month an announcement is due on domestic Covid passes.

The #QueensSpeech today referenced to a string of draconian laws the Government is planning to introduce. Big Brother Watch will have its 👁️ on the following:
🚓The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill: which will create 10-year sentences for protests that risk "annoyance", "inconvenience" or "disease", and reintroduce digital strip searches.
The Electoral Integrity Bill: which introduces #VoterID will prevent many thousands of people voting, despite no evidence of systemic ballot box fraud and only 1 fraud conviction per 20 million votes cast in the last 2 General Elections.
