Our goal should not be tolerance. Our goal should be justice.
But even setting that aside, this framing misunderstands what tolerance is.
Tolerance isn’t friendship. Tolerance is the bare minimum of justice. It’s permitting people to exist as equals under the law even if you find their beliefs or very existence offensive.
On almost every metric, Republicans fail the test of tolerance.
We *tolerate* Republicans.
If they get cancer, we think they should be treated without having to worry about cost. If they struggle to make ends meet, we think they should have a roof over their heads, enough food in their belly, clean water to drink.
They can’t say the same.
We tolerate Republicans.
We think they shouldn’t have to worry about how they will live once their bodies become too old to generate profit.
We don’t have a list of bathrooms they should be kept out of.
We don’t seek to nullify their marriages.
They can’t say the same.
We tolerate Republicans.
If their twisted beliefs lead them to violence, we believe their physical safety should be a priority in their apprehension, their trial should be just, and their sentence carried out without violence or cruelty or exploitation.
They can’t say the same.
We tolerate Republicans
We think their children should be well-educated and, if they come to school hungry, should be given food to eat, simply because they are hungry.
We think they should be able to vote, easily and safely.
They can’t say the same.
Harmful marginalizing disenfranchising Republican efforts are real—targeting Black people, women, LGBTQ people, non-Christians, disabled and sick people.
Their willingness to be friendly with people who oppose them isn’t an expression of tolerance but an expectation of order.
Their axis is one of abuse.
Abusive people prefer to maintain an abusive order, and so cultivate relationships with those willing to overlook intentions. They launder their support of atrocity through individualist enablement.
That’s how abuse works.
But it’s not tolerance.
Tolerance is the very lowest rung on justice’s ladder, and it is extremely offensive to the intolerant.
Many people consider themselves friends with the very people they harm, but get angry at the suggestion they begin a climb toward tolerance.
“I hate ‘cancel culture’ in schools, which is why I think we should have nonstop video monitoring of teachers, so we can fire the ones who say the badthink to our white children.”
The anti-wokers have discovered these tweets, and I was going to invite them to remain insanely angry about the threat of hearing uncomfortable truths, but let me assure you they have got it *covered.*
The Supreme Court's rulings systemically dismantling voting rights are constitutional negation. They present an argument for Biden and Congress to ignore an unlawful Supreme Court.
If the Supreme Court is going to act as a confederate council for an authoritarian party that is negating our constitution, then as a body they have invalidated themselves; it's no longer the Supreme Court of the constitution but the unconstitutional Roberts Court.
It's the duty of those who swore an oath to protect the constitution to negate the unconstitutional Roberts Court and install a new one.
That's the framing I'd like to see used on the Sunday shows. Let's get real with it.
Climate change is upon us and it is an existential emergency.
It requires an emergency footing response that is transformative, sweeping, and immediate.
We should abolish or replace any institution or entity that chooses to stand between us and such a response.
For example: “But we can’t pass meaningful for climate reform because of the Senate” is an argument to abolish the Senate, not an argument to stop pursuing climate reform.
Realize that whatever reason one would give for not passing immediate radical sweeping climate change policy is an argument for abolishing, purging, removing or replacing that thing.
It’s totally expected but still the effortless speed with which conservatives flip from “we aren’t allowed to say anything anymore!!” to “here are all the things you’re literally not allowed to say” is always breathtaking.
“We’re being censored by woke cancel culture! We’re afraid to say what we actually think!—also here is our new law forbidding mention of the following topics in public schools.”
lol, literally a laundry list of things these "woke cancel culture is coming for my free speech" warriors want to not allow to be said
Just read an article that amounts to “because of gerrymandering, vote suppression, propaganda, and anti-democracy efforts, if Democrats want to win elections, they must nominate candidates who won’t fight gerrymandering, vote suppression, propaganda, and anti-democracy efforts.”
Parts of this country are going to start seeing climate refugees from places like Florida and I really think we ought to rethink our hypercapitalist society that consumes people for profit and uses militarized authoritarian violence to enforce itself before we get there.
To me that seems like we're going to need to nominate some unconventional candidates who are willing to fight the status quo but idk.
