Interesting from @Dannythefink but surprised he misses the key driver:
Housing.

It’s not surprising London young vote labour when even those on 30k are fleeced of over 50% of their pay by private landlords.

Housing wealth, not income, now drives votes.

thetimes.co.uk/article/cultur…
It’s also no surprise that modest income older traditional labour voters vote Tory when they sit on a £200 000 asset they bought for 20k.

And when they’ve seen tories sink interest rates close to zero & triple locked pensions but tripled student fees.
3/

People really don’t get how much this has perverted society.
The UK is now approaching the point of being both “more capitalist” than much of the west but simultaneously having lowest home ownership in the west.

In other words capitalism without a majority of capitalists.
4/

What this means is that increasingly large numbers of people are educated & qualified but “housing precarious”.

The endgame here is non graduate older homeowners harvesting the incomes/work of younger graduates who can never aspire to their economic security.
5/

The solutions are obvious
1. Rent controls
2. House build program
3. Higher property taxes on high value homes & reduced income taxes on low/middle earners
4. Stricter monetary policy

But to do this threatens the Tories home owning demographic so the young vilified instead.
When majority of London homes are owned by a combination of

1. BTLers
2. Older Brits with £500 000+ in housing equity
3. International investors

…it’s hardly surprising the traditional Tory electoral offer of “2p off income tax rate” has lost appeal with young decent earners.
Indeed the situation is masked because there’s still a lot of older people who had really modest jobs who are homeowners due to low prices when they bought.

Once this generation dies out it’s not inconceivable that London will end up with an owner occupier rate of less than 30%.

This article from @sarahoconnor_ has got a lot of traction with Brexity types...unfortunately the truth is rather more complex.

ALL EU countries have been moving towards large scale abattoirs often intimately connected/owned by a single retail chain they save.

1/1
2/

The idea that EU membership fed this is thus getting the cart before the horse. Indeed given the concentration of retail giants in UK compared to EU economies + a move away from EU agricultural standards...Brexit is almost certain to make this situation worse not better.
3/

As a wishy-washy liberal I'd love EU farm standards to be raised higher but idea that EU workers were responsible for this is simply wrong. It's the power of UK supermarkets dominating UK food consumption that has shaped food production.

Only govt & laws can change this...

The British govt has informed the UN the country is changing the GB car registration system revoking the GB designation validity.

From September all British cars should have a “UK” designation as part of Boris Johnson’s patriotic Union strategy.
carthrottle.com/post/gb-sticke…
2/

Boris Johnson’s “Union Unit” forced through the change for patriotic reasons in order to emphasize Northern Ireland’s role in the Union.

The change is estimated to cost millions as companies and car drivers have to adjust their registration & car designations.
3/

Further changes foreseen are to accentuate the terms UK and British.

It is expected that the term GB will be dropped from sporting or public bodies in order to confirm the status of Northern Ireland in the UK post Brexit.

+Labour win Batley & Spen election+

Close election, sees conservative vote drop by enough to wipe out the spoiling action of George Galloway’s socially divisive “Workers party”.
2/

Decline in LibDem, Greens & independents vote suggests (at this stage) enough people switched to help Labour candidate over the line as Labour vote declined under the assault of a combined right wing & far left support for Galloway.
3/

Interestingly the right wing vote split between at least 5 parties helped Labour over the line.

Had UKIP, English democrat & For Britain & Jayda Fransen not stood, the Conservatives could have taken the seat.

Result:
The right wing split enough to cancel out left split.

UK govt “offered full compliance” on the northern Irish protocol as a quid-pro-quo to getting the EU to accept equivalence for the city of London in European financial services.
2/

What’s surprising about this is how little it’s been reported on. Perhaps journalists are worrying about calling this gambit or outcome too early…

The Telegraph did a bit on this but (as usual) put a rather unhelpful top heavy Telegraph spin on it.

Whether you think this tactic good or bad or even if you disagree with the way I’ve phrased this there can be no real doubt now that, for the UK govt, it considers the deal with EU still “up for grabs”.

In other words the Brexit negotiations “are ongoing”.

I know a few people a bit nervous about England doing well for “jingoistic/Brexit related” reasons.

Don’t be!

The England team is a wonderful group of lads led by a socially conscious manager.

& a 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Championship win could help align/rejoin in lots of unexpected ways….
The connection between success in sport & jingoism is more complicated than many liberals realise.

There’s a school of thought that winning a sporting event can be quite useful to defuse feelings of unhealthy nationalism as this comes from an unhealthy inferiority complex.

Next point:
What would you rather have?

Patriotic feeling channelled into Rashford Southgate & co or Brexit?

Some will of course do both, but it’s a lot more difficult to sing the praises of this England team & be rightwing as Tory MPs have found out

Sterling scores 4 minutes after Chris Waddell demands he be substituted.

15 minutes of glorious torture now.
Can England see this out?

They have the players, do they have the temprament?
They have!
