New update on domestic extremism - “July 6 Update On The Jan 6 Insurrection: Domestic Extremism in the U.S., 6 months later” clintwatts.substack.com/p/the-july-6-u…
What’s changed since the insurrection, law enforcement pressure and internal disagreement have led to splintering amongst chapters in large militias. But young neo-Nazi growth online continues & they are meeting up in person
Those extremists accelerating, organizing in last 6 months are collectives better with technology & not under investigative pressure. Hence younger white supremacists.
Philadelphia remains a hot spot to watch. Noticeable changes between two different protests. Proud Boys on left, not the same as Patriot Front on the right.

Assuming all the details in this story are correct, (checks calendar) this would mean USA 🇺🇸 suffered another ransomware attack from alleged Russian criminals & a Russian Intel agency hack on a political party 2 weeks after the Biden-Putin summit #NotDeterred
As noted in story, was this breach or attempt to infiltrate the RNC by Russian intelligence service coordinated with a diversionary Russian criminal ransomware campaign? Maybe not, would be quite damning if determined
2- if Putin knew of the targeting & approved hacking of RNC post summit, pretty brilliant. Attack the opponent of Biden test American resolve in cyberspace broadly (will 🇺🇸 do anything?) & Test Biden’s commitment defending ‘all’ Americans including GOP used kompromat

In the first paragraph of Jan. 6 Senate report - I'm already frustrated. "FBI and DHS officials stressed the difficulty in discerning constitutionally protected free speech versus
actionable, credible threats of violence."
rules.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
"In testimony before the Committees, officials from both 2 FBI and DHS acknowledged that the Intelligence Community needs to improve its handling and
dissemination of threat information from social media and online message boards." Ugh....
If FBI & DHS had done an intel assessment based on social media postings of Trump supporters, and disseminated it around USG, what do you think would happen? 'spying on Trump campaign', 'Deep State'....'peaceful protest'

Countering ransomware problem requires imposition of costs "FBI Director Christopher Wray, in a WSJ interview, calls the fight against cyberattacks a shared responsibility that includes government agencies, the private sector and average Americans" wsj.com/articles/fbi-d…
for almost a decade, the U.S. response in cyberspace has been hand wringing, half steps, sanctions, charges against hackers unlikely to be arrested. Not gonna work, we know this because problem has only gotten worse
Guessing admin will head into Biden-Putin summit, will issue a "stern warning" but stern warnings have been repeatedly issued & Russia doesn't stop, because they know nothing will happen, U.S. won't follow through

Regarding Giuliani, see sanctions Sep 2020, from “late 2019 through mid-2020, Derkach waged a covert influence campaign centered on cultivating false and unsubstantiated narratives concerning U.S. officials in the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election” home.treasury.gov/news/press-rel…
“Derkach’s unsubstantiated narratives were pushed in Western media through coverage of press conferences and other news events, including interviews and statements.”
“Between May and July 2020, Derkach released edited audio tapes and other unsupported information with the intent to discredit U.S. officials, and he levied unsubstantiated allegations against U.S. and international political figures.”

Good discussion here from @JonKBateman & @craignewmark similar endpoint as counterterrorism circa 2009 "The debate about countering disinformation can itself be a fact-free zone: long on theories, short on evidence." slate.com/technology/202… via @Slate
agree with the overhype of disinformation when most of what occurs is propaganda, and disinformation without a base of propaganda is less effective, but I'm not convinced there's a data problem (volume), a data sucking center will not be fruitful
There needs to be fusion between Silicon Valley & USG/EU, but it should not be for reactive study, should be for proactive action. Fusion center concept already proposed, met with yawn & shrug securingdemocracy.gmfus.org/advanced-persi… Image
