.@rweingarten: Texas's new law basically says that educators need to say slavery is a betrayal of the foundational principles of our country. But that's not true - it's in the Constitution. The question becomes, how do we teach things like the Civil War, Dredd Scott, and more?
.@rweingarten: Some of our country's history is uncomfortable, but it works to help kids become critical thinkers when they understand the facts, look at diverse perspectives, and come to their own conclusions.
.@rweingarten: I'm not surprised by the attacks on me. I am really concerned about the attacks on our educators, who have spent the last year trying to help kids learn through this pandemic.
.@rweingarten: What Trump did, and what the GOP has learned, is creating this culture of fear & uncertainty. Now that it's clear we're going to get back into the classroom, they have to find something else to create chaos and fear with.
.@rweingarten: We don't teach critical race theory in grade school. That's a college level course. What we teach in K-12 school is history. We want kids to be able to understand and analyze history.
.@rweingarten: Laws like Texas's will leave a huge hole in some students' educations compared to students in other places. To be able to thrive in this world, you need to be able to think critically. If we don't help kids develop those muscles, we'll be worse off.
.@rweingarten: I was actually really heartened to see the recent @axios poll of college students, Democrats and Republicans who said they wanted to learn about critical race theory. axios.com/critical-race-…
.@rweingarten: I'm impressed with the level of commitment I've seen in our members to get people back into the classroom safely. We're doubling our resources & focus on literacy and recovery so that kids get their mojo back.

.@rweingarten: I'm a history teacher. In the teaching of American history, you talk about race. You talk about the Civil War. You talk about Jim Crow. You talk about the Civil Rights movement. The issues around race & discrimination are issues of American history.
.@rweingarten: CRT is a term most people wouldn't have heard 6 months ago. It's an analysis in theory that's taught in law school. What we teach in K-12 schools is history.

@rweingarten We teach history in a way where you take salient pieces of American history, you look at them, and you examine them so your students can understand them and think critically about them. - @rweingarten
