If you want to watch President @JoeBiden's remarks, check out the stream here: whitehouse.gov/live/
I'll also have an in-depth report for @CourthouseNews if you miss it!
Remarks should be underway shortly.
President @JoeBiden today says to translators and interpreters in Afghanistan that have assisted US forces over this very long war: There is a home for you in the United States, if you so choose, and we will stand with you as you stood with us.
@CourthouseNews
Biden says 2,500 special immigrant visas have already been approved for those interpreters/translators et al that assisted US forces. Fewer than half of those 2,500 visas, however, have been utilized to date. Sometimes because people want to stay, he says.
Biden: When I made the decision to end involvement, I judged it was not in the national interest for us to continue fighting this war indefinitely. I made this decision with clear eyes and am briefed daily on battlefield updates.
Biden: But those who argue we should stay six months more, or one more year, consider the lessons of recent history. In 2011, we agreed to end our combat mission in 2014. In 2014, they argued one more year. We kept fighting, kept taking on casualties. In 2015, the same & on & on.
Biden: nearly 20 years has shown that just one more year fighting in Afghanistan is not a solution but a recipe for being there indefinitely. It Is up to Afghans to make the decisions about the future of their country.
Biden: Let me ask those who wanted to stay: how many more of America's sons and daughters are you willing to risk? How long would you have them stay?
Biden: Already we have members of the military whose parents fought in Afghanistan 20 yrs. ago: would you send their children + grandchildren as well? Would you send your own son or daughter?
.@JoeBiden, after remarking that 2k+ US soldiers killed, 22k wounded, thousands coming home with PTSD: "I will not send another generation of Americans to war in Afghanistan with no reasonable expectation of achieving a different outcome."
@CourthouseNews
No country has ever been able to unite Afghanistan. Not in all of its history, Biden says.
The future of Afghanistan is not for the United States to determine, it is for the Afghan people to decide.
A lot more to report on beyond a few pithy tweets. Story up soon for @CourthouseNews.

Inbox: Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx of North Carolina will have her appeal of a $5,000 fine for allegedly evading House metal detectors upheld, the House Ethics Committee announces.
Foxx was heading to a vote & according to an incident report by U.S. Capitol Police in May, she evaded a magnometer, brushed off a request for her to stop and then allegedly told reporter Olivia Beavers "Why don't you deal with things that are important?"
forbes.com/sites/andrewso…
The comment to Beavers, as first reported, was prompted because Beavers saw Foxx skip past the magnometer and said, "I don’t want to get you guys in trouble, but I’m going to be reporting on that."

Starting today in Virginia: Adults 21 and older can legally possess weed in the commonwealth. You can't have more than 1 oz of cannabis though + no intent to distribute. The commonwealth legalized it back in April. Ppl with over 1lb of weed? You face up to 10 years in prison.
Though legal possession of small amounts of marijuana is effective today in Virginia, you still cannot legally consume it public. And you can only own up to 4 plants at home for personal use.
