In the entire history of the NHL, there has never been a non-expansion team that was a bigger embarrassment than the Buffalo Sabres that would go on to survive long-term.
At this point, to close up shop would be the best-case scenario.
This level of incompetence is unsustainable.
Usually when people say "I could coach/manage better", it's a hyperbole. Not here. Forget even me, I am a professional sports writer who is famously never wrong. Imagine yourself, a lay plebeian. In what imaginable way could you mismanage Buffalo worse than these "pros" have?
Think about it. What could you possibly do to make it worse?
How can Briere/Drury be screwed up more? Inspirational captains who led the team to a Presidents Cup season - allowed to walk for nothing after the team completely alienated them with disrespectful, low-ball proposals
What could you do to make The Tank worse? The team purposely became the league's laughing stock to get a lottery pick, then lost the lottery, got another "can't miss" prospect and screwed him up so badly he desperately wants out of the team after six horrible seasons.
Or think of O'Reilly. The most heart-and-soul player they ever had, who bleeds, sweats and ejaculates hockey - reduced to depression, tearfully admitting to media he no longer likes the game, the game that is his entire life.
Traded for less than nothing, only to win it all.
Playing for Buffalo made Robin Lehner into a suicidal, Trumpian alcoholic. Was cured immediately as soon as he left.
Playing for Buffalo made Jeff Skinner into a pale shadow of himself, robbed Tyler Hall of all his scoring ability and turned Eric Staal into a fraud.
Playing for Buffalo has turned Rasmus Dahlin, another can't miss kid, into a bumbling incompetent. Casey Mittelstadt and Rasmus Ristolainen, top picks w/ huge upsides, are terrible now. And the next young stud, faced with the prospect of going to Buffalo, wants to stay in school.
How could you possibly mismanage this worse?
How could anyone?
A person actually trying to run a hockey team into the ground wouldn't be able to help it but do better by sheer accident.
This team is an embarrassment to the entire idea of professional sports. It must die.
Now.

Great commentary, BTW. The modern GOP is a far-right, extremist, even cultist party by any international standards, but America's political discourse continues to pretend it's mainstream.
Of course, GOP's slide into sectarianism began a long time ago, with Limbaugh and Gingrich.
It really is amazing. America has a centrist party, with substantial center-right and center-left factions, the Democrats. In any country in the world, Harris and Buttigieg are centrists, Biden and Manchin are Merkel-style conservatives and Sanders and AOC are center-left.
America's other major party, anywhere in the world, is a far-right, extremist, nativist fringe party, with its most moderate members (think Murkowski and Collins) still comfortably on the right wing of most conservative parties.

I think it's time Slava educates American filmmakers on our names. There are just a few simple rules.
1) None of our names ever end with an "off." Ever. This only happens with German names (Altenhoff, Hotloff), and only for those people whose first name is Standartenfuhrer.
1A) "But what about Smirnoff Vodka, Slava?" What about it? You can name your vodkas anything you want. You can name it Smirnoff, Smirnogg, Smirnokk or Katzelenbogen. Just don't name people that. OK, on we go.
2) There are male and female last names in Russia. Female names are made by adding an "a" to the end of the male name. And male names are made by adding "ov" to any random stupid word that pops into your screenwriter's head.

I've not seen Black Widow, but I know how Hollywood portrays Russians, and here's what I think it will be like.
Elite Russian assassin Natasha Romanoff arrives in MOTHER RUSSIA™️
WOMAN (also hot, also elite, also assassin): "Khello, Natasha! I am Anastasia Ivanoff, your seester!"
NATASHA, accentlessly: "Hello, Ansastasia Ivanoff!" (Continues in incomprehensible gibberish.)
SUBTITLES: (Speaks Russian)
ANASTASIA, accenting Russianly: "Vee must go now to see our fazzer, Gregor Kalashnikoffa"
NATASHA: "It is March, he surely shall be drinking his vodka now."
GREGOR, accents vodkaly: "Akh, khello, gorrls! Vant try my vodka? Khere my friend, Arkady Stepanovna!"
ARKADY: (incomprehensible gibberish)
NATASHA: "Ah, I can hear from your speech you come from Northsouthern The Ukraine! Is the vodka harvest good there this year?"

People don't believe me when I say that Russian hockey players come to the NHL for glamour and are thus not interested in places like Minnesota, Winnipeg, Buffalo, Edmonton and St. Louis. How many more examples do you folks need?
Or indeed Columbus, Raleigh, Calgary and Nashville. At all. Not even a little bit. A trade demand or a KHL offer are always just around the corner.
If it's not New York, California, Florida or a "big" Canadian team, don't even approach them with this crap.
Pittsburgh and Detroit are also glamorous since every Russian kid has grown up playing EA Sports NHL as the Penguins or the Wings, thanks to Mario and the Russian Five.

Here is Slava's Short Explanation on Why Russian States Collapse.
Spoiler alert: American presidents have zero things to do with it.
Basically, it goes as such. The Russian state has basically remained the same since its founding by Ivan III in the late XV century...
It stands on the following pillars:
* Absolute centralization (any self-rule is lethal to the state)
* Primacy of state's interest over individual rights
* A sanctified absolute ruler
* The laws are relative and exist not to ensure justice but to support the power structure
This system is not without its merits. It can be very effective in warding off external threats, mobilizing the nation to combat (or at least weather) crises and holding together an ethnically diverse empire by the force of sheer cruelty.
But it's not designed to evolve or reform

So is Reagan's. JFK at least may have saved the Earth from extinction.
Seriously, why is Reagan a top 10 president? He had nothing to do with the death of the Soviet Union, his administration was criminal, his economic policy based on fairy tales and crass thievery. A winning smile and America's indescribable infatuation with right wing politics?
Like, this whole idea that "Reagan won the Cold War" is one of the most inane myths of Americana. Guys, I was there! None of us were like, "OMG, Reagan is killing our country! Stop, Reagan, what are you doing?"
Reagan had zero effect on anything. Literally, my grandma did more.
