It's not hard. If the food smells bad it IS bad. You have hundreds of millions of years of evolution in your nose!

What the label actually indicates varies (by producer). a “best by” label on one product, a “sell by” label on another, and a “best if used before” label on a third. different meanings, but the average consumer may not immediately realize that, or even notice there’s a difference
