“Fans”
I planned to chat about the football but this is bigger than that.
Some of the scenes from Wembley & across the UK are frightening.Yes every country has groups of extreme fans but none more so than England it seems. I’m ashamed of their behaviour. I spent Saturday..
2/23
running a tournament for @StreetChildUtd with refuge children & there was so much positivity & valuable discussion about discrimination. To see the racial abuse England players have received 24 hrs later fills me with anger. These kids & those players don't deserve that.
3/23
On this topic, I celebrated last night’s win in my home town of Bedford last night which is known as Little Italy. After seeing the scenes at Wembley when I was walking to the river where we congregate to wave our flags & enjoy victory, I was scared to wear my Italy shirt

in fear of being attacked. Its 2021 but it doesn’t always feel like it. Check out my Instagram stories if you want to see me celebrate. Instagram search @giannibuttice_
🤣 always a plug
Seriously though, its time to talk ball...

Managers
No one wants to hear me gas on about how the game unfolded but to summarise, I think Mancini got the better of Southgate & a lot of that comes down to the substitutions. Gareth clearly has trust issues with many of his flair players...
6/23
and was slow to bring on the likes of Saka, Grealish, Sancho and Rashford. Foden didn’t feature.
Ronaldo/Messi are perhaps the only 2 attacking players in world football you do not sub at any cost if you’re chasing a game. A big problem for me is Southgate’s reluctance..
7/23
to sub Kane and Sterling, & as good as they are you should never be afraid to sub attacking players when a game is 120 minutes long. Don’t underestimate the importance of fresh legs versus tired defenders. With Italy dominating the ball, England were always going to tire..
8/23
quicker & Mancini was smart to that & made substitutions a plenty. Italy could only dream of having a bench with a Sancho, Grealish or Foden. Nevertheless, he wasn’t scared to change his attacking players knowing 5 weeks in to a tournament the likes of Verratti, Barella...
9/23
& Immobile were never going to be able to keep their performance levels high for the duration. By the final whistle we had Belotti who was nearly relegated last season with Torino, the 2 Sassuolo lads Berardi & Locatelli, Bernardeschi who can’t get a sniff at Juventus...
10/23
& Christante all on the pitch. From this bunch, only Locatelli gets near an England XI but it was Italy that looked most likely to win the game. Why? Because Mancini had a team with a clear identity which didn't rely on individuals but a team effort playing the same way.
11/23
Stars
Notable mentions have to go to some of the England lads & I thought Maguire, Walker, Shaw, Phillips & Sterling were sensational. It’s fair to say all 5 are elite players if they weren’t already. But now let’s call out some Italians…
12/23
Donnarumma
I’ve said all week I thought the game would go to pens & if it did I was confident because of this guy. Most massive keepers don’t get down quick/aren’t as agile as the rest. Gigi is, he’s the complete package. Saves v Belgium/Spain will live long in the memory.
13/23
Spinazzola
One of the stars of the tournament. Like Walker, his recovery pace gets us out of trouble but unlike Walker he offers so much going forward.A creative force we missed in the semis/final. Without his injuries we would be talking about him as the best in the world
14/23
Bonucci/Chiellini
For all the doubters, this stat blows my mind. The 2 completed the entire tournament without being successfully dribbled past by an opposition player or making an error leading to a shot. As Schweinsteiger says, they’re still the best.
15/23
Verratti
Whilst all moves start with Jorg, they all go through Verratti. Very few can control the tempo of a packed midfield like him. With his cute passes around the corner and ability to get out of tricky spaces he's levels. My man of the match alongside Chiesa.
16/23
Chiesa
Massive goals against Austria/Spain and brilliant last night when chasing the game. Every great team needs someone like Chiesa. Many young wide forward carry the fearless and confident tag, but very few have his football brain to match. Big future ahead.
17/23
Insigne
Moved to false 9 last night on the hour mark and it changed the game. His ability to control long balls from Jorginho/Bonucci and find a runner is quite something. We can’t forget that goal vs Belgium too. Fair play to Mancini for sticking with his number 10
18/23
Farmers League
Whilst the Premier League is the best in the world I hope this tournament changes the opinions of the masses in England who call out other top Leagues as Farmers Leagues. Quite frankly I find it disrespectful and naïve. I will be a very happy football fan...
19/23
when PL fans consider players in Italy, Spain, Germany, France when they give their PL player the ‘best in the world’ tag without a second thought. Being best in the PL does not automatically mean that player is the best in the world.
A bugbear of mine.
20/23
Fantasy
I didn’t play the official game and had a go at @FanTeamOfficial for the first time. I won a bit of money & really enjoyed it. For the first time in a while fantasy was secondary. It was fun. It was a by-product and that’s how it should be.
Finally a few lines to remember my Euro experience:
🤣No one plays the Jorginho role better
✅That’s what we do
💡Italy have no superstars, but world class talent throughout, & that’s how we like it.
🔥Serie A is sick

Post lockdown Foden served me well, I even captained him in GW37+ (thanks Sharko) but Pep was experimenting. There was no title up for grabs and Foden was getting the minutes. Both left and right of a front three and even as a false 9 (for 45 mins) in the Champs.

Numbers
In has last 10 PL games he started 7 and was subbed on in the other 3.
His numbers were impressive. 5 goals, 1 assist, an impressive 26 goal attempts and 47 penalty box touches.
Now we’re all thinking, what’s not to like?
