Bollywood is facing what was faced by many industries, Brands & Products in 1990s when country, under PVNR opened up its arms to overseas investments and loosened restrictions; all as part of Lewis Preston led IMF plan when Indian took to mid path of economic reforms.
1/n
Well known Indian products & brands were pitted against world’s best brands & consumers were flooded with choices !
Better looking, better priced, updated technology, superior after sales & service & brands that were used worldwide; foreign products overnight edged out &
2/n
shut shops of many. Some I can fondly remember were Allwyn, Ambassador, Priya, Rajdoot, Fiat, HMT, BPL (ultimately), Kelvinator, Texla, Keltron, Onida & many electronic products produced by state firms like Uptron, Keltron & so on.
These brands & products were exposed to
3/n
fierce competition & better quality which some of our products could not match and were ultimately eased out.
I remember my friend proudly sending me a message “Ford Icon has arrived”, as he took delivery of his foreign brand car that day.
4/n
Consumer, who now had choices & was wealthier wanted to experience the quality that was available elsewhere. “Body colour number” car by Premier Padmini no longer enticed him. He was ready to pay, wanted the best, which our research starved products & brands couldn’t offer.
5/n
Netflix & Amazons of the world have arrived to challenge the Bollywood industry in a manner so reminiscent of 1990s
Onslaught of OTT platforms, available to consumer at monthly cost of 2 movie hall tickets, is unprecedented. Such is the relentless push of content by these
6/n
players that even Hollywood is worried with their rise. Add to English content from Hollywood & UK; the superb international cinema such as Spanish, Korean, Japanese, French & their Series that are top quality for decades in Indian language you speak; the consumer is spoilt
7/n
for choices.
One industry that is hit badly by COVID is film industry. And for last two years (approx) even the biggest fan of movies like Arvind Kejariwal, are also constrained to watch content at home. And suddenly they are exposed to top quality content that is
8/n
latest & is being viewed by viewers globally. Voila, where have you been all these years; wow what quality & Damn, look at that rating on IMDB. Everyone is suddenly connoisseur.
Fate of some of the movies (& content) produced by Bollywood in last 1 year shouldn’t surprise
9/n
anyone. It’s is 1990s for content viewer as he now has access to top end products from all over the world.
AK vs AK, Roohi, Gulabo Sitabo, Rasbhari, Chhapak, Thappad, Radhe, Coolie No 1, Stree, Roy & what not; all met the fate that should ring the alarm bell in ears of
10/n
content producers as they can no longer dish out substandard quality to consumer.
Bollywood Movie World is no longer insulated & no one is coming to theatre so soon. And if content is to be viewed on OTT then tighten up belts, earn eyeball time of consumer with quality
11/n
that is of international standard.
Big stars can no longer pull audience & their presence won’t matter if the quality of content is poor.
“Body coloured bumper car” on cheap price can’t be sold any longer ; Kia & Compass are here.

Wow, "Arujn", said my son the moment he saw a massive white sculpture on a roundabout in Bali; visited for fun, frolic & water, like most of us Indians do. Driver of the vehicle, one Mr Moyo, a kind hearted person, very calmly corrected;

"Son, that's Ghatotkach!"
It started our journey to learn from people who follow the religion far more ardently than us. Their knowledge of Hinduism & civilization is far better than the average level we possess.
It took me sometime to introduce Ghatotkacha to my son who

, all thanks to our inherent indifference, many of us wouldn't know beyond the 5 brothers, Draupadi & Lord Krishna from Mahabharata. So we quickly recited all the names, all to hide our embarrassment, coming from the original land of Hindutva, of Ramayan & Mahabharata,

Will WFH related HR and Management policies be a crucial factor in employee retention for firms ? COVID seems to be around much longer than we all hoped ;
Talking to some of my industry colleagues, especially at senior positions, I get to hear different voices.
Ones who are good at delegation of work at office seemed more receptive to idea of longer WFH policies & may even be fine to perpetualise the arrangement.
Managers who prefer to see their reportees in front are less amenable to the idea, as they fear lack of control &

mask their insecurities with reasoning of productivity etc.
Employee perspective is very important while crystallising policies. Resources are more likely to evaluate job options more on HR policies concerning #WFH
Firms that have management push on accommodative #WFH
I was traveling in France and worked with a French gentleman who worked in the firm which gave us some automation hardware systems.
A proud French he took me to city tour almost everyday after our day’s work was over. Paris is a historical city with art & architecture!

I was awestruck with his knowledge about European history & in particular knowledge about French art & history.
When we discussed families, he mentioned he has 2 sons busy with schooling.
Gentleman mentioned that the family has a History Teacher who comes home to

teach both their kids, and it is twice a week. Some of his friends have somewhat similar arrangement.
He emphatically said, you know nothing if you don’t know your history and you must ensure kids know the real history and it is passed on from one generation to another.

Apple, every year, manages to surprise with new features, which I often believe are reaching end of the line and can’t grow beyond a certain level, and every time am proven wrong by phenomenal team at apple 🍎.
