๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ This is highly misleading. If Greg Johnson was trying to say he didnโ€™t think ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘ฆ of his critics are โ€œsouthern pietistic moralistsโ€ (whatever thatโ€™s supposed to mean), he failed to communicate it & in fact implied the opposite, even in his attempts to clarify himself.
๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ First of all, to claim that itโ€™s even possible to posit that an โ€œan attack from pietistic southern moral๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘šโ€ doesnโ€™t intend to imply the existence of actual & particular โ€œpietistic southern moral๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘ โ€ who are involved in that attack is an exercise in obfuscation.
๐Ÿ‘/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ Second, to say, โ€œIโ€™m not intending to paint any of my ๐‘”๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘‘-๐‘“๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘กโ„Ž critics as pietistic moralistsโ€ is so worded as to seem most likely to be naturally & reasonably understood as implying the existence ๐‘›๐‘œ๐‘›-good-faith critics whom he does intend to paint as such.
๐Ÿ’/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ Third, to assert that a โ€œpervasive influenceโ€ of moral๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘š has โ€œshapedโ€ oneโ€™s opponents clearly implies that that those opponents have, to one extent or another, become moral๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘ . It alleges that their thoughts & behaviors are explained by moralism.
๐Ÿ“/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ Fourth, to try to turn the most natural & reasonable understanding of oneโ€™s own words into a ground for accusing someone elseโ€”viz., Carl Truemanโ€”of โ€œtwistingโ€ those words is indefensible & unworthy of a Pastor/Teaching Elder in Christโ€™s church. Greg owes him an apology.
๐Ÿ”/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ Donnie Griffin (@nimrod4Jesus) is right: Gregโ€™s โ€œ...multiple attempts at clarifying [his] original statement illustrate [his] own carelessness and probably a distinction with no difference....Moralism doesnโ€™t just hover around in some abstraction....โ€
๐Ÿ•/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ โ€œ...It necessarily emanates from moralists. To say that itโ€™s mere moralism that caused the issue is meaningless.โ€ Others have made virtually the same observation. It seems to me to be common sense.

But Iโ€™m now Iโ€™m going to go further & Iโ€™m not going to pull my punches.
๐Ÿ–/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ Nor will I try to squirm out of my words with references to โ€œpervasive influencesโ€ that somehow โ€œshapeโ€ people.

The dogma thatโ€™s invaded the PCA & other churches that says we shouldnโ€™t expect SSA to be cured or healed in this life derives from a modern form of moralism.
๐Ÿ—/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ Itโ€™s proponents are moralists. They subscribe to the same kind moralism that presupposes alcoholics will always be alcoholics, drug addicts will always be drug addicts, gambling addicts will always be gambling addicts, etc.
๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ This moralismโ€™s source teaches that those struggling with addictive, compulsive, or seemingly uncontrollable behaviors must begin by admitting their powerlessness over them, submit to their own preferred โ€œhigher power,โ€ & remain faithful to the rest of the program.
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ At the root of this moralism lies this one unshakeable tenet:

โ€œโ€˜Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholicโ€™ is a simple fact we have to live with.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ This is ๐‘›๐‘œ๐‘ก the Christian Gospel. In fact, it negates it by โ€œhaving the appearance of godliness, but denying its power,โ€ (2 Tim 3:5 ESV). When Paul wrote, "And such ๐‘ค๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ some of you,โ€ (1 Cor 6:11), he referred not merely to our forensic standing in Christ,...
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ...but to transformation by the power of Holy Spirit, the same power he refers to in 2 Tim 3:5. (Cf 1 Cor 6:17: โ€œBut he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.โ€) Any โ€œhigher powerโ€ that canโ€™t ๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘™๐‘ฆ transform a sinner from an alcoholic or...
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ...homosexual into someone who ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘๐‘ฆ ๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ฆ no longer either of those things but rather a new creation in Christ is not the same Holy Spirit of God who applies the benefits of Christ to His people (2 Cor 5:17). And anyone who...
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ...imports the notion that we shouldnโ€™t expect a particular sinful pattern of life, no matter what it might be, to be radically, even if ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘ข๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™๐‘ฆ, washed away by the power of the Spirit of God is misrepresenting the Gospel message. And anyone who doesnโ€™t...
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ...teach that the Bible insists on a full โ€œputting offโ€ of the lusts & sins of who we were in Adam & โ€œputting onโ€ the opposite of those lusts & sins in Christ isnโ€™t teaching the biblical view of sanctification (Eph 4:22ff). Celibacy is not the opposite of homosexuality.
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ Further, while celibacy is a gift for a limited few, itโ€™s a grotesque distortion of Scripture to say it was designed for gay people as โ€œsexual minorities.โ€ Nothing in Scripture suggests this. Itโ€™s an error designed to support other errors. But the moralism that lies...
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ...at the heart of it all is the one which misuses celibacy to deny the power of the Spirit to transform what was corrupted in Adam to what is restored in Christ. Those who teach this are modern moralists because theyโ€™re misusing a gift of grace for service as a...
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ...means of grace for sanctification. This portends disastrous consequences for believers who struggle against the sin of SSA. It leads to a truncated doctrine of repentance that will inevitably produce incomplete actual repentance. Be wise & be warned (Ps 2:10).
๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ/๐Ÿ๐Ÿ For further reading, I recommend Carl Truemanโ€™s exceedingly gracious response to Greg Johnson here:

To say that there's a promise in Scripture that's for Israel but not for the church is contrary to the teaching of the New Testament. All of God's covenant promises are to spiritual Israel and Christians are spiritual Israel.
๐Ÿ/๐Ÿ”

Being ethnically Jewish does not make someone a true, spiritual Israelite:

ยฒโน No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.

(Romans 2:29a NIV)
๐Ÿ‘/๐Ÿ”

Christians are the true circumcision:

ยณ For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the fleshโ€”

(Philippians 3:3 NIV)

1) Should Calvin have checked with these guys before writing this?:

"He offered as a sacrifice the flesh he received from us, that he might wipe out our guilt by his act of expiation and appease the ๐‘ญ๐’‚๐’•๐’‰๐’†๐’“โ€™๐’” righteous wrath."

Calvin wrote in his Institutes:

"For we could not believe with assurance that Christ is our redemption, ransom, and propitiation unless he had been a sacrificial victim." (2.16.6, Battles trans.)
2/12: The Latin text, with Calvin's own Greek interpolation, reads:

(A. Tholuck, ed., 1846)
3/12: Earlier translations of ๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘š๐‘Ž have "victim" (Beveridge, 1845), "slaughtered victim" (John Allen, 1813), & "sacrificed offering" (Thomas Norton, 1762), in place of Ford Lewis Battles' (1960) "sacrificial victim."

At the risk of being cited for fulfilling Godwin's Law, Hitler is famous for saying that the bigger the lie, the more weight it carries. And this one's pretty big. Just how big is it? Let's take a look, shall we?
