Before CA lawmakers granted prison guards a $5k bonus & an 8% raise over the next 2 years, the guards’ union made a few charitable donations.
Recipients included two nonprofits run by the very legislators who were preparing to vote on the pay hikes. calmatters.org/politics/2021/…
This week, political watchdog @CA_FPPC is considering new rules that would require more disclosure in certain cases when officials ask interest groups to give $$ to nonprofits. fppc.ca.gov/about-fppc/hea…
It comes after this investigation I did last year: calmatters.org/projects/calif…
Since then my talented press corps colleagues have also dug into the rise of donations to politically-connected nonprofits by interest groups that lobby at the Capitol.
A couple updates since my investigation last year:
AG Rob Bonta has stepped down from the board of his foundation, and it made new rules banning donations to groups that employ his wife Mia Bonta, an Assembly candidate.
Political watchdog @CA_FPPC still has not completed its investigation of Assemblyman Evan Low's fundraising practices, launched after I reported that donations to the tech caucus foundation were being kept secret.
Who's trying to replace @GavinNewsom? A few GOP politicians, a reality TV personality, a YouTuber, a retired detective, a cannabis advocate, and even a new-age shaman
Not running: a prominent Democrat or a superstar a la @Schwarzenegger
41 candidates is less than one-third of the 135 who ran to replace Gray Davis in the 2003 recall.
Newsom effectively helped shrink the field by signing a law requiring all candidates submit 5 years of tax returns calmatters.org/politics/2021/…
Tax returns for the 41 candidates will be posted tomorrow on the Secretary of State website for the world to see. Newsom's spokesman says he submitted his too, the same ones reporters have been allowed to review. calmatters.org/politics/2021/…
On July 27, after a handful of lawmakers and Capitol staff got COVID-19, the Assembly passed a rule allowing members to vote by proxy during the coronavirus pandemic
"Pregnant people might be at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19," according to the CDC cdc.gov/coronavirus/20… , and babies "appear to be at higher risk," says the Mayo Clinic:
This woman’s grief is so powerful. #StephonClark ‘s fiancée Salena Manni says “my family’s world was turned upside down” by his killing.
Mother of #StephonClark says: “The death certificate says ‘homicide,’ it does not say ‘accidental murder.’” (Worth noting that the medical definition of homicide is different from legal definition.)
Shane Harris says his group is backing legislation to mandate independent investigations of police shootings, by the Attorney General. He’s calling it the “Stephon Clark Act.” Similar legislation has stalled for the last several years.
You know it's the end of an era when the one and only @DanCALmatters says he's letting go of his @JerryBrownGov archive. Luckily for all of us it's going to the state library for good keeping. But first, a few highlights. THREAD ⬇️
Walters clip, 1977: "The combined result of those policies has been a rapidly increasing dependence by California on low-sulphur crude oil from Indonesia, an authoritarian military dictatorship whose regime has had a lengthy and close business relationship with the elder Brown."
Excerpt of Brown interview transcript, 1974: "What has characterized government in recent years is a certain amount of banality, at the federal level corruption."
