Carlottta Lucumi is one of the leaders of the bloody slave rebellion at Triunvirato plantation in Cuba in 1843. Using music & talking drum, she sent coded messages to nearby slaves coordinating the rebellion. They destroyed 5 sugar plantations & several coffee & cattle estates.👇
She is called Carlota Lucumi for belonging to the Lucumi ethnic group made up of Afro-cubans of Yoruba descent. Lucumi was used to describe Yoruba-speaking people during the Atlantic slave trade & according Historian Lovejoy, it was 1st used in the Benin kingdom in 15th century👇
Carlota Lucumi is said to have been born & raised in the Benin kingdom untill about the age of 10 when she was kidnapped & moved to Cuba as a slave. It believed that the Benin used "lucumi" to refer to its Yoruba neighbours & the Portuguese adopted it for southern Yorubaland.👇
Historian Sandoval alluded to the fact that "lucumies" were employed in the palace administration of the Benin kingdom & to this day, the variant of Yoruba language spoken by the Odiani clan in Delta state is called Olukumi by neighbouring communities.

The 1st Whiteman to visit present-day Nigeria was invited by Oba Ewuare to Benin city. The Edos recorded it as a visit by god. This so-called god was actually Ruy de Sequeira who visited the city in 1472 after Ewuare sent Ogbeide & Ogan to the land of gods to invite god. #Thread
The Portuguese had just arrived Sao Tome (1470), Principe (1471), Fermosa Flora, or Bioko & Lagos (1472). Stories reached Oba Ewuare of these mysterious beings from the sea who were believed to be gods. Oba sent Ogbeide the Okhuaihe, a man with mystical powers to invite them.
Okhuaihe who is from Ikpokpan went with Ogan n’Ekhua, an Esan man from Irrua also with mystical powers. They sailed from lkpe village through Orhionmwon River past Ologo town into the Benin River near Koko town. Benin River led them into the Atlantic ocean, (land of the gods).

Urban planning & naming in Benin city is unique & reflects the traditional sociopolitical system & philosophy of life of the Benins. By studying them alone you will learn more Edo history than from many books.
#Thread
Benin City is divided into several Quarters & broadly into 2 parts: to the north Orenokhua and to the south Ogbe. Orenokhua once housed several quarters of the ordinary citizens, craftsmen, various specialist groups, and many chiefs.
The palace quarter called Ogbe was once separated from Orenokhua by a broad road called Oroghotodin. The wide road stretches from Oba market road straight to Sokpoba road. This was before a ring road (carved out mostly from the Ogbe side of the divide) was built there.
