1. Within the space of a few days I've read an article on an English website dealing with gender based violence and another on a Sinhala paper maligning and potentially inciting violence against a specific woman using images from her social media accounts without her consent.
2. The kicker? Both the English website and the Sinhala publication belong to the same media house. In all honesty, I've seen some great content on the English platform and they've been supporters of progressive causes. On the flip side the Sinhala paper regularly publishes BS.
3. So which represents the ethos of the organisation itself? I believe they both do. I think it represents the complex and exploitative relationship between language, ethnicity, socio-economic class and power politics in SL.
4. In my experience this "disingenuity" or culture of fraud & hypocrisy is present across all aspects of our society. We've been reduced to a status quo where as individuals our values are determined by the company we're keeping in the moment rather than any real convictions.
5. Might look at elaborating on this thought process in a blog or an article at some point in the future but this is just my two cents for now. "Pandemic of Fraud" sounds like a good title. #lka
