[THREAD]
Many new entrepreneurs believe it’s great to enter a business with zero competition.
They run away from it.
But, competition isn’t a bad thing…
Especially when you know how to turn your competitors to a ladder.
Today, I’m going to show you how to spy on your competitors.
You’re going undercover to see what makes them succeed (or fail)…
And you’ll be using their plans to make yours.
Got it?
Now, let’s get started.
1. Spying on their social media (ads & strategy)
Hop into your competitors' funnel to see exactly what they offer the customers.
A good place to start is their FB ads.
Thankfully, Facebook has made pages transparent enough that you can see what ads they run currently.
- Click on their FB page
- Go to page transparency
- View active ads to see what offers they’re sending traffic too.
- Note your findings.
- If possible, sneak into their funnel from there.
On their page, you also note the
- frequency of their posts,
- topics they talk about,
- followers’ comments, and
- how they interact with the followers.
But, you may want to be a ‘digital’ spy if going directly to their page is dirty work 😏
In this case, use tools like Social blade and Quicksprout to gain insight into every information concerning your competitors’ social activities without scrolling through their page everyday
2. Spying on their content
You want to know what content your competitors are putting out.
This gives you an idea of the problems your audience face and allows you to refine your content and offer to focus on these problems.
Instead of scrolling aimlessly through their site, use tools like
- Buzzsumo and
- Similarweb...
...to analyze their content, view traffic sources, and where they send the traffic to after their website.
3. Spying on their emails
If you’ve been doing your job well as a spy, you should be seeing your competitors' emails by now.
It’s a bit difficult to analyze though, because the process is usually ongoing.
So what do you do?
If you run an ecom company, you can use Mailcharts to view competitors' email data and compare with yours.
Owletter is another tool that does the job for you. You don’t have to subscribe to all your competitors' newsletters.
4. Spy on their brand
You’re thinking “what does this even mean? Isn’t that what I’ve been doing since?”
No.
Now, you’re going to be checking for errors these competitors make.
Find their weaknesses and strengths.
Does their customer support suck?
Highlight your competitors’ weaknesses as part of your strengths.
Then craft a marketing campaign around this. 🥴
Use Google Alerts for basic monitoring...
Butt in when your competitor fails and you get the spotlight.
5. Spying on their SEO strategy
Whatever you do, you want to dominate search rankings.
When someone Googles a relevant keyword in your niche, you want to be the first company they see.
Find the keywords your competitors rank for using tools like
- Ahrefs and
- SEMrush...
...and create content around the low-ranking difficulty and high search volume keywords.
6. Spying on their unique mechanism.
The unique mechanism is what your competitor claims make them different from others in the market.
You’ll find this on their landing or web pages and several parts of their funnel.
It’s what makes them stand out.
Note this down.
Now that you’ve become a full secret service agent…
How do you use the information you obtained to improve your business?
1. Study your audience again
Go to areas where your audience hangs out…
On Facebook, Reddit, Forums, etc,
Since you’re a spy, you can ask questions about the problems they’re facing, or just scroll through to read the comments.
Take notes.
2. Develop your unique mechanism and marketing strategy.
If your competitors claim to solve their problems, why are the customers still complaining?
Your competitors are still doing something wrong, Find the pot hole and fill it.
Let’s take an example here.
In the past, vitamin C supplements came in regular tablets only.
While customers saw the effects, people that took too much had digestive problems.
Someone came up with liposomal vitamin C....
...Vitamin C in liposomes that
- don’t give you stomach pain,
- is completely absorbed into your bloodstream, and
- has 10X the amount of vitamin C in a regular tablet.
That’s how the unique mechanism works.
Find a major area people still have complaints and see how your product can fix it by creating new features...
...or using a new angle your competitors have not explored or utilized.
3. Run!
No, spies don’t run away except they’ve been caught.
Run your campaign and see the results of your hard work.
You’ve been able to
- find a unique angle for your marketing,
- keywords to rank for, and
- how to engage with your audience for the best results.
Create enough buzz, and you’ll be seeing massive profits in no time.
