Anyone realize that you can “teach a man to fish” AND give a man a fish? Or that it’s harder to learn when you’re starving?

These aren’t mutually exclusive needs. One is immediate, the other structural.

It’s a poor trick to point to one as an excuse not to fulfill the other.
I’ve noticed that those who treat this as either/or often don’t want to attend to the immediate need OR the structural one.

Affordable college? No.
Forgive student debt? No.
Address systemic injustice? No.

They don’t want to teach fishing. They’ll restrict access to the river.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

The saying doesn’t end with “so don’t give hungry men fish.” In fact, it demonstrates how an immediate need draws attention to a structural one.
So sure, let's "teach a man to fish." Break up the commercial fishing monopolies overfishing the waters. Subsidize easily affordable fish schools. Offer no interest loans on boats and gear backed w/government collateral.

No? Oh you just meant don't feed the hungry guy? Cool.
I actually think we should start with all the "teach a man to fish" stuff immediately. Let's address structural injustices.

We should have started long ago—there'd be less hungry men to feed. But let's start today. The earlier the better.

Because a stitch in time saves nine.
Feels like there's a longer essay in this trend of taking famous aphorisms and deliberately subverting their meanings to opposite ends. Like how "a few bad apples spoil the barrel" got shortened to "a few bad apples" and is now used as a rationale to ignore police corruption.

Bullshit.

I have family members all the way up the Fox News Facebook misinformation hole, and they didn’t get vaccinated because they felt respected; they got vaccinated because their children told them they wouldn’t get to see their grandchildren until they got vaccinated.
3 observations:

People don't tend to change their worldviews from a place of comfort.

When selfish assholes decide to behave like selfish assholes, the problem isn't that others aren't coddling their feelings enough.

Selfish assholes aren't everyone else's job to fix.
Selfish assholes would love for you to *think* they are everybody else's job to fix.

It puts them at the center and in control.

That means when they act like a selfish asshole, it's *your* fault. You should have been more persuasive. Daddy hits you because you made him angry.

Republicans really want us to believe Martin Luther King Jr. only ever said one thing, and that one thing is “you can’t criticize white people, because white is a skin color, and acknowledging skin color is the one and only definition of racism.”
Martin Luther King Jr. wasn’t critical race theory, he was critical race praxis, and he was murdered for it, and the Kevin McCarthys of 1968 celebrated joyfully and openly.
White people turning Martin Luther King Jr into their “get out of racism free” card after murdering him is one of the most racist things that’s happened in my life time.

those who are narcissists
treat criticism of themselves
as an attack upon some

The masses facing the multitude of existential perils caused by greed and income inequality don't find their hope in the sight of a handful of men with wealth as vast as their egos, pissing away all our resources on a race to construct the world's largest private roller coaster.
Attacking Elon Musk isn't "attacking space." It's recognizing that we can address climate collapse, AND care for everyone's basic needs, AND have a regulated space program that exists to benefit everyone, if only we seized 95% of our wealth back from parasites like Elon Musk.

I mean what the actual nazi fuck are we permitting on the airwaves.
Today’s “supposed to wipe out a certain amount of people” will inevitably lead to tomorrow’s “supposed to wipe out a certain type of people.”
There is no civic, public, moral, or free speech value to what Newsmax is doing, or Fox News, or Trump, or the Republican Party. It’s weaponized language designed for genocide. All should be shut down and prosecuted immediately.

The fact that they can and might be willing to carve out the filibuster from topic to topic merely underscores the exact extent to which centrist Democrats do not want to be permitted to act without Republican approval.
Look, if this is what it takes to pass real voting protections, then I'm glad they'll do it ... but what are they going to do about a Supreme Court that is committed to demolishing voting rights?

Why would they require permission from an anti-democracy party on any matter?
Passing as many bills as possible that not only receive no Republican votes, but were designed to receive no Republican votes, crafted with absolutely no Republican input, written to repudiate every single Republican intention, is the best thing this Democratic Congress can do.

Reminder that before 1/6/21 at the national Capitol was 4/30/20 in Michigan.

This is a pattern, directly abetted by an anti-democracy authoritarian white supremacist Republican Party. They aren't done trying. If Republicans aren't stopped, they'll eventually succeed.
As a society, we desperately need to stop treating as extremist statements expressing the extremity of our danger.

We need to start treating the actual extreme danger as extremist, and take proper action to counter it.

We have a major party politically committed to downfall.
Downfall of representative government. Downfall of democracy. Downfall of the public commons on every level: schooling, parks, public health, housing, safety, environment. Downfall of science. Of knowable fact.

They'll get downfall, if they're allowed.
