/ We just found out that the @WMATA board is considering suspending or banning people from transit after being arrested (not convicted, just arrested) for certain reasons. THAT’S BAD. @charlesallen#defundmpd
/ This potential change would expand police power and grant metro police the authority to detain more people for more reasons.
/ Enforcement would be up to @MetroTransitPD, police and will almost certainly perpetuate harmful stop-and-frisk practices and excessive use of force #defundmpd
/ There are also significant due process concerns with taking away our access to a critical service like public transit — especially when someone has only been accused of a crime, not convicted. This is an infringement on our rights. #defundmpd
/ We refuse to give police this authority: it will not make us safer, it will not make Metro safer, and it will not deter behavior. It will only expand police control and increase harm. @charlesallen#defundmpd
/ It’s also important to note that there is still NO meaningful oversight of the @MetroTransitPD, and that’s an actual urgent issue that the Metro Board has yet to address. #defundmpd
/ Send a letter to the @WMATA board TODAY telling them you oppose this rule change and reject their attempt to criminalize DC residents and block our access to fundamental services like transit. Email boardofdirectors@wmata.com
We need everyone's help to squash this oppressive rule change. This is as much a statehood and equity issue as it is a policing issue. Contact @wmata TODAY!
