Yeonmi was 14 when she escaped North Korea to China
She left behind a traumatic childhood...
Her mother used to take her via piggyback to sports stadiums to watch the public executions of their neighbours

She remembers being warned by her mother not to whisper, because even “the birds and mice could hear me”, and grew up believing that dictator Kim Yong-nam could read her mind.
After escaping, she assumed she had left all that behind.
In 2016, she moved to New York City to start a degree at the elite Columbia University...
But she was shocked to find what she describes as a culture of ideological intolerance, hostile to free expression and the open exchange of ideas. The worst aspects of her new Ivy League life reminded her eerily of North Korea.
At her first-week orientation, Park mentioned she would like to read Jane Austen.
Her instructor told her Austen was a “bigoted white-supremacist – by reading classical literature you’re being brainwashed subconsciously”.
“Why the hell did you pay the fortune to go to university?” Park remembers thinking.
In a music class, several of her coursemates objected to studying the music of Western civilisation, because that would involve studying “bigots like Mozart and Beethoven”.
With memories of public executions fresh in her mind, she became exasperated by claims of “oppression” at the elite college, where tuition fees usually exceed $60,000 (£43,288) per year
“These people do not have actual problems, so they create problems and think they are victims. All these privileged kids going to Ivy League schools saying, ‘I’m so systemically oppressed’.
'You know people who are actually oppressed don’t know they’re oppressed?”
