[Thread] US documents suggest that they had a hand in the protests in Cuba 🇨🇺 earlier this week.

My new investigation for @MintPressNews

mintpressnews.com/documents-poin…
1) Marco Rubio celebrated the protests as being "started by artists, not politicians."

What he doesn't say is that US agencies have been funding those very same art/music communities for years, with CIA fronts, the NED and USAID plowing $$$ into them in in hopes of regime change
2) Cuban hip-hop stars immediately endorsed and even led the demos.

Yet the NED's most recent report notes that it is grooming rappers to become anti-communist leaders.

ned.org/region/latin-a…
3) A ton of big outlets have noted that rapper Yotuel and his song "Patria y Vida" have been crucial in igniting the protests.
4) But a currently live NED grant offer for up to $2 million directly references "Patria y Vida" and suggests that's exactly the same thing they'd like to sponsor.

5) The US House appropriations budget has just alloted $20 million to "democracy" projects in Cuba. What they mean by "democracy" is made clear when they say that not one penny can be used to help the Cuban government.

govinfo.gov/bulkdata/BILLS…
6) The US gov & the corporate media were so eager to push this protest that they even used pics of pro-government demos or gatherings in Miami to illustrate how well-attended the anti-government protests were 🤦
7) There was also a TON of blatant bot spamming re:protests, which pushed it to trend for more than 24 hours on Twitter.

8) The first account to use #SOSCuba was not from Cuba, but from Spain. This account posted almost 1300 tweets that day. Twitter has since suspended the account for inauthentic behavior. But it let the obvious bot farming continue for days.

9) This is a failed color revolution @BenjaminNorton told me on the @MintPressNews livestream yesterday.

It was a really great conversation. Check it out (and subscribe) (also available as a podcast).

10) While the protest may have begun organically, the way in which it became worldwide news was not.

Yet, despite all the attention and endorsements from celebs and politicians, they could only muster a handful of smallish protests.

Ultimately, this was the US' Bay of Tweets.
On another note, did you know that Cuba trains American doctors for free if they promise to go back home and serve the poor in their communities?

I interviewed a number of American doctors who were studying/have studied in Havana for this article:

I've been very skeptical of the numbers and images corporate media are using for the Cuba protests🇨🇺.

This is one of the only shots where you get a sense of how big it was.

NBC used it under the headline "thousands protest in Cuba."

I manually count 175 people in this photo. Image
Why were so many of the pictures used close ups where you couldn't tell how big the action was? That's what politicians do when no one attends their rally.

I might be off by 5 or 10 (the pic quality isn't great). But this ain't thousands.
OMG after they showed that clip they cut to this photo of a PRO-GOVERNMENT demo (note the red and black flags emblazoned with Fidel Castro's political movement, 26 Julio), claiming it was an anti-government protest.

I wrote about this on Friday:

Cuba 🇨🇺: US media play up protests, play down effect of US sanctions.

My new article looking at the media coverage of Cuba for @FAIRmediawatch.

fair.org/home/media-pla…
A ton of corporate media outlets waited until the last paragraph of their stories to even mention the blockade as a reason for the economic problems

This is despite the fact that official US documents explicitly state that the goal is to bring about hunger & a collapse in wages Image
Corporate media also used pictures of demos in Miami or even the more numerous PRO-government protests to illustrate how big and impressive the anti-government action on the island was. ImageImage

By inverting the x-axis, CNN's Chris Cuomo manages to take a drop in crime and make it look like it is spiking.

This is a crime against journalism and absolutely blatant fearmongering.
Picture comes from this crazy segment where Cuomo demands more people go to jail, but that "woke society" is preventing it.

As @daviddoel said, it sounds like he is auditioning for a gig on Fox News.

Come to think of it, that Y axis is extremely suspicious, too.

Never trust a chart where the Y-axis doesn't start at zero.

Here's what CNN's graphic would look like reading the correct way and using two reasonable scales.

It defeats the whole point of the segment.

Most people don't read past the headline to know that it was 618 workers out of 677,348 who received the vaccine. Or 0.09%.

The only conclusion is @Reuters is deliberately publishing anti-vax propaganda against the Chinese vaccine.

Unreal levels of irresponsibility.
Reuters has been cynically pumping out anti (Chinese) vax stuff for months.

Read the headline. Think what it implies. Then read the passage below it from half way through the article.
The @nytimes is also in on the action.

If you read the article, you'll know the Brazilian guy in question committed suicide.

So in what world is this in any way newsworthy?

Only if it can be used to pump up fears against China and its vaccine.

[Thread] My new @MintPressNews long form article on why the lab leak has gone viral in independent/alternative media, despite the lack of evidence supporting it.

mintpressnews.com/why-liberals-s…
In recent weeks, alt media stars like @TYT, @ggreenwald, @mtaibbi, @jimmy_dore, @thomasfrank_, and @krystalball have promoted the theory.

This is not an attack on them. Rather, I hope they read this and reconsider their positions.
Much of the new wave of pro-lab leak thought is based on the work of Nicholas Wade, a disgraced racist pseudoscientist who thinks black people are poorer because they're genetically more violent and lazy. Wade's theories on Jews have earned plaudits from the KKK and David Duke. Image

The US government is funding NGOs in Venezuela that are urging people not to get the Cuban vaccine - the only one that is available.

Unreal levels of savagery. 🇺🇸🇻🇪
There isn't even one word the the story about the WHO, yet Bloomberg puts them in the headline to make it seem like it it's the Cuban and Venezuelan government who are the anti-science ones. Pathetic.
Also, as @v_zilber points out, "homemade vaccines" makes them sound like the medical equivalent of moonshine, adding to the scaremongering.
