Only john doesn't mention the darkness, and that is consistent as his account of the crucifixion is one of the shortest and his main aim seemed to be corresponding Jesus' death with the old testament prophecies, not the finer details of the day.
Its okay for john to have a different perspective.

I think its quite fascinating that people expect all biblical characters to be morally spotless just because they were chosen by God
Even the saints never claim to be sinless, unless granted special grace like Mary, or Thomas Aquinas with chastity

I don't think Catholicism has ever claimed that there are physical locations for either. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I wouldn't say they are not real, merely unobservable, with the exception of notable prophets and saints who had visions etc

I'm going to refute this point by point using genesis. Wait a bit.
The most popular theory of universe formation asserts that the earth formed when gravity pulled the earth together from dust and gasses. Hawking uses a meaningless metaphor. The earth is a sphere *now*. Ironically, The Big Bang was proposed by a Catholic priest.
