If you are learning (or planning to learn) WordPress, you should avoid making these mistakes 😱

πŸ‘‡
Not configuring automatic backups

Automatic backups will save you if things go sideways

All great hosting providers include backups for free, but if you don't have this option, make sure that you set up and configure a plugin like Duplicator (recommended) or UpdraftPlus
Buying bloated themes

Stick to efficient and fast themes

I recommend GeneratePress, Hello Elementor (for Elementor sites), and OceanWP

Other themes will contain a ton of plugins and inefficient code
Using too many plugins

Not all plugins are bad, but as a beginner, try not to use more than 10, as a general rule of thumb

Limiting your use of plugins will keep the website simple and easy to maintain
Using cheap hosting

WordPress generally needs a bit more juice to run well

Using cheap hosting will slow down your website

I recommend SiteGround, Kinsta, and @TFWPHosting
Not using caching, image compression, and minifications plugins

Caching, image compression, and minification are a must

Use a plugin to make your website faster by serving cached assets

I recommend W3 Cache but some hosts have their own caching solutions
Not using a free CDN

Some hosts offer a free CDN service (like Kinsta and Pantheon), which is great for security and can speed up your website slightly

If not, you can set up a CDN for free on Cloudflare
Not changing the permalink structure to post name or custom

The default WordPress permalink structure contains URLs ending with "p=123" which isn't very SEO friendly

Change them to something better by following these instructions:
wordpress.org/support/articl…
Not installing or misconfiguring an SEO plugin

We recommend Yoast or Rank Math

There is plenty of documentation on their website (and training) on how to configure and use these properly

They will help you learn about SEO and improve your website SEO score
Not creating a child theme when making customizations

Always create a child theme when modifications are required!

If you don't use a child theme and make your modifications to the main theme, they will get overwritten when you update
Don't use a different theme for every project

Pick a good quality / fast theme, and learn to use it well

You will be able to reuse the same theme and functionality that you have created for future projects
Not keeping your website updated

Update your plugins, and theme frequently (at least once a month) to avoid security and performance issues

This is key and will avoid many headaches

One of the biggest SEO lessons I learned the hard way:
Targetting the wrong search keywords

Here is what I learned πŸ‘‡
What are search keywords?

A search keyword is a word or set of words a user enters when searching on Google or another search website.
When I was starting out, I did what most people would do

I thought about what my clients would be searching for and found the search keyword with the highest search volume

In my case, the keyword was Calgary web design Image

Top 5 mistakes I made as a WordPress freelancer and how to avoid them πŸ‘‡
1⃣

Not standardizing my tools for new website builds

Pick a set of tools and learn them inside and out.

For example, use the same themes, builders, and processes to cut down on costs and build duration.
2⃣

Asking clients to buy their own hosting instead of managing it for them.

This is a great income stream for agencies.

Pick a good hosting company that you can partner with as an affiliate and resell hosting.

Wow, so close to 10k Twitter friends

Unbelievable 🀩

I had no idea that when I started tweeting last year that I would ever reach 10k

Here are some tips if you want to get there πŸ‘‡
When you're starting out, getting traction is hard

Pick a niche and stick to it

Find big accounts in that niche and interact with them

This will increase your visibility and get you initial followers
Share stuff that you know or that you are learning (related to your niche)

You don't have to be an expert

Tweeting what you are learning is also a great way to grow

I have built my agency by launching and maintaining WordPress websites

Here is a thread with πŸ”Ÿ most common WordPress questions answered

πŸ‘‡
Is WordPress free?

WordPress is an open-source project. It's free to download, modify, and use. You will need a hosting account to launch your own WordPress site.

WordPress .com is different. It's a paid subscription-based product for blogging and building websites (like Wix)
Do I need to know PHP to work with WordPress?

Not unless you are planning to create your own themes and plugins. PHP is also useful for troubleshooting WordPress.

You won't need it in order to create and launch websites however.
