Sure, I’m an only child and that may matter to context but I still cannot believe no one shows up to congratulate you when you have WORKED ALL DAY.
I overcame inertia, self-interest, opportunity costs and BIOLOGICAL IMPERATIVES to produce a product for capitalism and the least a mofo could do is say thank you with a fucking cake.
My actual reward is EXERCISE that I do for MYSELF and if you ever sit and really think about it, this is all bullshit.

I had the most edifying chat this morning with a writer working on a book about whiteness and country music and y’all really should call me more often to talk about fun smart stuff. All anyone calls me with usually is car warranties and bills.

This x 1000. Part of the challenge is how young some people are when they start gunning for academia. We shouldn’t expect any 22 year old to have the kind of clarity you need to make these kind of distinctions, but non-trad students have to make them to survive it.
I absolutely would have made far more disastrous choices and trade-offs had I entered grad school at 23 years old, like I was “supposed” to. Absolutely.
At 29, you couldn’t lie to me about who I was. And you couldn’t get me to accept that you were always right. And you couldn’t convince me not to trust my own sense-knowing.
