So categorized 200 million dynamic websites that born and die is very difficult, however two main project have committed to do this work: DMOZ (Directory Mozilla) and Curlie (successor of DMOZ).
The open content directory of World Wide Web links is a great idea for categorizing the Internet, however DMOZ closed in 2017 (archive of DMOZ dmoz-odp.org) and Curlie.org is very inactive.
Nowadays with the improvement of search engines this directories of links have been abandoned, because people tend to search for content and answers in the meta-search.
But web directories are still great alternatives to search engines:
- Have a big list of webs about the same topic.
- Does not consume energy of the servers.
- It is not sort by marketing, ads or SEO position, instead of search engines do.
- Don't use your privacy to target with ads and extract information.
- It is totally free always you have a local database of links.
- You see the structure of website.
The main issue about web directories is the way to search info. It's hierarchical structure to navigate inside of categories and subcategories to find a topic hinder the search.
Therefore, all efforts should be focus towards improving the quality of the directory structure.
