Here's my 1 hour a week hack to building a personal brand inside any Big Company™️.

Now that I'm never-gonna-be-employed-again, you can steal this.
So you wanna:
*not just be a tiny cog in a big machine
*build your personal brand with execs
*without 'networking' or doing 'coffee meetings'

Go to Substack.

Find the Account button.

Hit delete.

99% of people don't need a public newsletter.
Instead ... you're going to start a PRIVATE newsletter.

Here's the difference:
* Private, you must be invited to join (public = begging people to subscribe)
* Your goal is 20 highly valuable readers from inside your company - instead of 10,000 random email subs from twitter
Your newsletter needs a format.

I created one called "1-2-3". it's a simple remix of @JamesClear's 3-2-1 newsletter.

Mine stood for:
1 photo
2 thoughts
3 links
I'll show you an example in a second. But checkout the types of replies I would get.

The attention & respect of these 4 readers are worth more than the 40,000 people on my public newsletter
I would send the email every sunday. It took me 1 hour to write, and had a casual vibe.

Anytime I would meet someone in the company I really liked, I would tell them I'm adding them to my private newsletter.

It was an excuse to stay in touch.
Here's an example of one of my 1-2-3 emails.
It's a little awkward to start, so here's how I framed it:

"before i worked here, I used to send an email every sunday to my close advisors & mentors... now that I work at Twitch, I consider you my new advisors and mentors. So I'll be sending it to you"
I opt-ed everyone on the exec team in automatically. I told them it was easy to unsubscribe. Just quit the exec team ;)

After a month, I sent an email saying "going forward, only going to send this to those who want it. Reply if you wanna stay on" - 75% replied staying on
This works because:
* it's easy
* it scales
* theirs no obligation for them to read or reply
* if you are an interesting person...it'll show

warning, if you are boring and have nothing interesting to say.. that'll show too...
hm.. now that I think about it. I should keep my 1-2-3 emails going.

I'm going to send one this sunday. If you wanna get it, go to shaanpuri.com and put your email in.
ps. I teach this in more detail, along with other writing hacks in my power writing course --> maven.com/generalist/wri…

After I hit my 30s - I’ve made a handful of key life adjustments that gave me way more energy, happiness and helped me shed the dad bod

Sharing a list here of what worked - to help any other dudes in their 30s/early 40s take control

Number one…
#1 - walking backwards

My trainer took this from kneesovertoes guy (Google him)

A lot of knee pain (I’ve torn mine up playing basketball) comes from constantly walking forward and over developing those muscles.

5 minutes of back pedaling daily balances out the body.
#2 - double my protein intake (1g for every 1 lbs of weight)

As you age, the body loses strength and muscle mass. Simply increasing protein is a fast fix for getting the muscles dense instead of loose

I’m thinking of creating a course on Maven to teach the one skill that's helped me the most in my career...

...POWER WRITING

- Got me my dream job in tech back in 2012
- Grew my twitter by 100k followers in 4 months
- Drove over $5m in sales

What is power writing?
In school they want long essays & you study shakespeare.

I sucked at that. I get exhausted writing long essays & my grammar was horrible (still is).

Lucky for me - in the real world you want:
* less words
* simple language
* stories that get people hooked
Want a job? write a killer email to the ceo

Want to build a network? cold email & DM people you admire without looking like a cringey idiot

Want to sell more stuff? your words are your gunpowder.

writing is a master key, that opens many doors

GUEST THREAD about.... Buying Businesses.

*How to find a business to buy
*How to finance it so you only put down ~10% or less
*How to grow it
*How to sell it for a profit.

Handing the mic to my buddy @SievaKozinsky who does this for a living....
OK - let's say you wanted to buy a business and make $1M in the next 18 months.

Here's the playbook:
STEP 1 - Finding a Biz.

I recommend focusing on a space like "Home Services"
* landscaping
* HVAC
* Plumbing
* Electrical contractor

These businesses are profitable, you don't compete with FB/Amazon, and there are lots of bigger buyers when you want to sell.
