I'm really trying not to judge people here but when JAB brought up Gloria Steinem in some weird display of feminist credentials my eyes rolled back into my head
Repeatedly telling everyone how Gloria Steinem is the patron saint of your household is all very well (a bit weird but ok) but it doesn't help women when your only response to open, known harassment is to slap the harasser on the wrist with "verbal counseling"
I don't see how you salvage this. No amount of meetings and discussions about how to move forward can erase what's already happened under your watch.
I just keep imagining this interview for the role of president of Blizzard, where the *first thing* JAB brings up in this conversation with Bobby Kotick is, we are expected to believe, Gloria Steinem being the patron saint of his household.

There's a quest in Mount Hyjal that has bothered me for a long time and I hope it will be removed one day. It's called A Bird in Hand. wowhead.com/quest=25731/a-…
The quest involves capturing and then physically assaulting a Harpie while a Night Elf holds her down to get information for her. She's evil, so the game positions her as "deserves it". Some screenshots from Wowhead:
It's one of the few quests in the entire game that gives players a choice.
If you like, you can kill her after you've beaten her up.
The quest is nasty. When I first played through it, I felt shaken. You could feel the misogyny radiating from it.
One thing men in the industry can do to make women feel more comfortable is listen to women, but specifically not only the women who say what you want to hear. Seeking out women who tell you what you already think in a higher voice doesn't count. Listen to women who challenge you
I've seen men on here actively claiming that they're trying to do be good allies, retweeting women who are critical of them to a large following, with some comment about how hurt they feel about not being automatically assumed the most super best good guy.
Like, it's so easy to respond to criticism by seeking out reassurance that the criticism is unfair. Or to act personally hurt.
It doesn't make women feel safer though, it just makes you feel better.
If Blizzard actually makes changes, fires abusers and starts placing more women and women of colour in senior roles, the next uphill battle will be the very loud "anti-woke" element of the community claiming the non-"old boys club" are ruining WoW. They already do it.
Going back to those fake leaks that u watched a lot of the community share uncritically, one major giveaway that they were fake with a specific agenda is they make no mention of the sexual harassment lawsuit, & in fact try to imply the company is being destroyed by "woke" changes
Like, those leaks actually suggest disassociating from the Kael'thas Sunstrider voice actor was the wrong move. The implication being that they should have kept the guy accused of sexual assault.
Hagrid is a racist. Don't make me go through the Harry Potter books to prove it.
Saw Hagrid described as "the only pure character". Fuck off. Hagrid is specifically positioned as the character that buys into all the stereotypes 'but is is a good guy really' so you're supposed to forgive his lazy bigotry
Hagrid thinks
- Muggles are trash
- Blood is a good indicator of worth (see his repeated claims that Harry must be good & gifted because his parent were)
- It's ok to use magic to frighten and harm muggles (actively encourages Harry to do this)
- House Elves should stay slaves
Noooo. Listen. My memory is a little fuzzy but one of the biggest and worst changes in Skyrim was how the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood didn't even attempt to have a certain, twisted morality, the way they did in Oblivion. 🧵
Oblivion Thieve's Guild had certain rules, chief among them the rule that you DO NOT MURDER on the job. We are Thieves, not Assassins. You also DO NOT STEAL from the poor, beggars etc. We do not take from those who don't have anything.
The game had serious in-game consequences if you broke these rules. Thieves Guild was the most fun questline in Oblivion. You felt like Robin Hood at some points. Very steal from the corrupt elites in charge to help the oppressed.
