Armed militias, under orders from then-president Trump, aided by Trump allies in and out of government, attacked the US Capitol on 1/6/21, with the intent of assassinating members of Congress and the VP, to install Trump as dictator.
1/10
Trump was impeached for leading this violent assault on America. Republicans blocked the guilty verdict in the Senate.
A nonpartisan commission was proposed to investigate the insurrection, conforming to all of Republican demands--
2/10
--equal representation, the ability to subpoena witnesses, etc.--and Republicans blocked it in the Senate.
Speaker Pelosi said there =would be= a Special Select Committee in the House to do the investigation. She set up rules that Minority Leader McCarthy agreed to.
3/10
The Committee would have 8 chosen by the Speaker and 5 chosen by McCarthy. The Speaker would be able to veto the Republicans chosen, since some of them participated in the insurrection. McCarthy agreed to it.
The Speaker chose 7 Democrats and 1 Republican for her 8 picks.
4/10
McCarthy chose his 5 picks, two of whom had spoken out loudly against the whole idea of investigating the insurrection, and one of them has proven immensely disruptive in virtually committees he's been a part of.
The Speaker exercised her right to reject them.
5/10
McCarthy then pulled all five of his picks, and declared the Committee to be a partisan exercise--and to prove it, he said Republicans would commit their own partisan "investigation" (which has no legal authority or legitimate meaning and can't subpoena anyone).
6/10
Speaker Pelosi has since named a second Republican to the Special Select Committee, and hinted she may name three or four more, to make the full 13: 7 Dems and as many as 6 Reps. That's as bipartisan as you can get, since she has no obligation to name =any= Republicans.
7/10
The Special Select Committee has its first hearings next week.
McCarthy thought he could name bombthrowers to the Committee who would disrupt the proceedings and turn them into a circus. He was convinced the Speaker would wimp out and let that happen. He was wrong.
8/10
After pulling all his picks, McCarthy was convinced he could blackmail Speaker Pelosi into reinstating his bombthrowers. He was wrong about that, too.
He was convinced Pelosi would move forward with only 7 Dems and the one Republican she'd picked originally. Wrong again.
9/10
It's on. We're going to have a real committee, with a real investigation, and real results, real conclusions, and real findings. We will know exactly who did what, when, with whom, why, where, and with what money.
Oh, it's on.
Don't try to out-maneuver Madam Speaker.

As you watch the Olympics, consider this: The worldwide sports industry spends something like $500 billion to $1.25 trillion every year.
What a shameless waste of money.
1/5
Imagine how much poverty could be ended, how much climate change could be stopped, how much wealth inequality could be reduced, if that money was not wasted on the playtime of a few athletes and the beer-guzzling couch potatoes who watch them.
2/5
Just imagine it. We could solve all the world's problems with that money. What a shameful waste. Every year.
The Earth is burning, and a bunch of guys are wasting as much as a trillion dollars a year, just so they can play with their balls.

I wrote a thread couple of weeks ago about how the purpose of Russian psyops is to convince =you= that democracy doesn't work, and that =no one= in government is interested in fixing it.
Here's an example.
And two more low-follower commenters saying almost precisely the same thing.
Almost as if they're all working in the same room.
The intent of Russian psyops trolls is not to advance a particular philosophy or to support a specific political party.
It is to create division and distrust, and to end democracy by convincing you that our democratic institutions have failed and cannot be repaired.

They don't do this by necessarily spreading hate, or by being insulting and offensive (though some do that). The operation is much more sophisticated.
The pull you in, sometimes with uplifting posts that make you want to follow them.

Then they talk about their suspicions concerning other Americans, usually people or movements you might otherwise see as your allies. The wedges between "centrists" and "leftists" are one example.
When "leftists" use "liberal" as an insult, trolls smile.

This image looks like a network of neurons, but it isn't. It's a map of strings of galaxies spanning a billion lightyears. Each shining pixel is a galaxy of a hundred billion stars.
When I see images like this, I can't help but wonder if the Cosmos is the mind of god.
That would mean, of course, that we are part of that Mind. God isn't separate from us. We are parts of the god-mind.
By now you've all heard and seen the video of Republican lawmakers "praising" Senators Manchin and Sinema regarding the filibuster.
Republicans know what they're doing. They are here intentionally stirring up fights within the Democratic Party and among Dem votes.
1/9
Be aware: Manchin and Sinema aren't up for reelection until 2024. Republicans want Democrats to fight about them for the next three years. Republicans want to re-take the Senate, so want to cast Manchin and Sinema as turncoats to break up Democratic unity.
2/9
Since President Biden took office, Manchin and Sinema have both voted with the Democratic Party 100% of the time on every issue that has come to the Senate floor.
Regardless of how you feel about the filibuster (I want it ended), we need both of them in the Senate.

The crisis of global climate change isn’t the first man-made climate disaster we’ve faced in recent history. In the twentieth century, America dealt with and solved a regional crisis of our own making. It almost happened again soon after.
1/11
We prevented the second disaster the same way we had solved it the first time.
It was solved by federal intervention.
In the early 1930s, the American Southwest was engulfed by a serious drought, which was exacerbated by then-current farming and grazing techniques.
2/11
This area used to be the breadbasket of the nation. Taking advantage of the rise in grain prices from the First World War, farmers in the southwest overplanted, removing most of the indigenous grasses and other flora with long roots that used to hold the soil in place.
