Mizoram stresses on an 1875 notification from the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act 1873, which demarcated the hills from the plains and valleys in the North East. The hills were notified “excluded areas” and it essentially restricted free travel. (2/n)

How long has the conflict been happening?
Mizoram was carved out of Assam as a Union Territory in 1972, it became a state in 1987. Border-related agitation between the two states have happened on and off since 1994. But the current scale of tension is unprecedented. (4/n)
But it would not be wrong to say that the current scale of tension is unprecedented. Incidents of violence involving highway blockage, arson, physical assault and death. Both states accuse each other of encroachment. With time, the dispute has got an ethnic colour. (5/n)
The districts of Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimgang in the Barak valley of Assam, dominated by Bengali speaking community, share a 164 km long border stretch with three Mizoram districts -- Aizawl, Mamit and Kolasib.
Among the many well-painted buildings in Ashok Nagar’s D-Block stood the lone testimony of violence and hatred. Its walls blackened by soot and its insides bearing marks of wanton destruction, the Badi Masjid stood scarred and a cynosure of all eyes.
On its minaret, the people who had ransacked it had left a haphazard sign of their actions — a saffron flag with an image of Hindu deity Hanuman with texts “Jai Sri Ram”, replacing the Indian flag which could be seen struggling for space on the same spot on one of the minarets.
Several such mosques, religious shrines (dargah) and a Madrasa were vandalised and torched in different parts of north-east Delhi over the last two days. Photos of several of them are available in tweets posted over the last two days.
