Among the many well-painted buildings in Ashok Nagar’s D-Block stood the lone testimony of violence and hatred. Its walls blackened by soot and its insides bearing marks of wanton destruction, the Badi Masjid stood scarred and a cynosure of all eyes.
On its minaret, the people who had ransacked it had left a haphazard sign of their actions — a saffron flag with an image of Hindu deity Hanuman with texts “Jai Sri Ram”, replacing the Indian flag which could be seen struggling for space on the same spot on one of the minarets.
Several such mosques, religious shrines (dargah) and a Madrasa were vandalised and torched in different parts of north-east Delhi over the last two days. Photos of several of them are available in tweets posted over the last two days.

Her neighbour Parveen elaborated on the sequence of events – on how mobs attacked shops and business premises in the Muslim neighbourhood. The soot on the walls bore testimony of it. For Parveen, the search was focussed – the XII board exam admit card of her daughter, Arshi.
Around 3 km away in Brijpuri locality, Suresh Kaushik could be seen trying to help a group of fire fighters engaged in cooling operation pertaining to a burnt four-storey building. That, Kaushik said, was his residence which he shared with his two siblings.

Spilled on the ground were the contents of 10 shops that are attached to the mosque — three sold footwear, a mobile phone shop, a salon, a financier, a couple of vegetable shops and garment shops.
