We are having a moment in history. A Pandemic. Economies are crashing. People are rethinking what their life means to them. What work means to them.

Our planet is burning and we have yet to come to terms with the sacrifices required to abate it. 1/14
Violence erupts in streets all over the world. The colour of your skin can mean the difference between life and death. Totalitarian governments are rising. People who, given their history, should eschew tyranny, are dealers in tyranny. 2/14
The ghosts of past injustices arrive and a lot of people are having trouble dealing.

A growing "land mass" of plastic waste is floating in the ocean. A testament to human arrogance. 3/14
We are killing off, directly or indirectly, species after species. Extinction is forever. And yet, we don't do anything about it. Not as a massive movement. 4/14
Employers exploit workers. Employers and governments unite to crush unions. They long for the days of slavery. "So efficient. So profitable. And having to pretend to be civil to inferiors is so tiresome." 5/14
The rise of disinformation. Outright lies from leaders. News media in cahoots with one political side. "Think tanks" funded to generate junk reports that shore up the political view of the right and/or send up trial balloons for prospective policy. 6/14
Since when did Joe Blow, the plumber you met on the bus, have just as valid opinions about vaccines as a highly respected epidemiologist? What has become of respect for expertise? Have the charlatans co-opted the show? 7/14
At least one provincial government is bringing in a curriculum that smacks of 19th century ideas of education. Highly dependent on rote memorization and with a certain white Christian slant... 8/14
At least one province in Canada is bringing in legislation that looks startlingly like a resurrection of residential schools. Check out Bill 64. Specifically the bits about students in northern Manitoba. 9/14
Police violence is a huge problem. Homelessness is a huge problem. Opioid addiction is a huge problem. Anti-vaxxers are a huge problem. Just ask my friend who is a pediatric ER doctor. She is seeing cases that are entirely preventable. 10/ 14
These are but some of the things that keep me up at night. I don't think I am alone. We are living in interesting times. 11/14
Despite all of that, we remain human. We sometimes need a bubble bath, or to curl up with a good book and pretend none of it is real. Sometimes we need to buy a bouquet from the grocery store, or take drive in the country. 12/14
Sometimes we need ice cream, or onion rings, or to just veg out while binging a tv series. Sometimes we need to go for a long hike.

These things create a sense of normalcy when nothing is normal. 13/14
And that is ok. It's even good. It's ok to take breaks. No one can be stressed and vigilant and heroic all the time. We all need to take breaks. It's ok. There are enough of us that we can take breaks. The mayhem will still be here when you get back. 14/14

In case you haven't been paying attention through the pandemic, if you live in Alberta, you are completely on your own to keep yourself and your loved ones safe from COVID. Yes, we have the opportunity to get vaccinated. No, there has been no real leadership on this. 1/11
There has been an offering of frivolous prizes you could win if you got vaccinated. No, the government is not going to give us any sort of proof that we have been vaccinated, other than sheets of paper which may or may not be recognized in other jurisdictions. 2/11
Kenney is so wound up with trying to please his backwards-thinking, anti-science, anti-vax base, and his corporate donors, that he has no time for, or interest in, public health. Now it seems than AHS has been fudging the numbers. There is no significant contact tracing. 3/11

Our neighbours keep bees. Yet, they do not have a single flower in their yard. They chemically kill the dandelions and clover. They mow their lawn every day. I have no idea WTF they think they are doing. 1/
They mow their lawn, daily, in this dry heat and you can see their topsoil rising in a plume behind the mower. 2/
Lucky for them, we have multitudes of dandelions in the spring, and an abundance of clover through the summer. Also flowers and flowering shrubs and fruit trees. 3/

A financial incentive may be the key to this bizarre request from the UCP. That would be common garden-variety corruption. But, it could be more... 1/10
You know the conservatives are wooing the gun crowd, right? So what is the next logical step after a woman in a hijab gets badly beaten or killed by someone she sprayed with pepper spray? 2/10
Someone in the UCP is going to announce that obviously, pepper spray isn't sufficient. Maybe the public needs access to tasers, or guns, to protect themselves. This is upping the commercial value of the product being promoted significantly... 3/10

I was sorting some papers this morning and I came across some typed copies of letters that were sent between family members back in the 1870s and 1880s. A member of the family had left home in Ontario, determined he was going to make his fortune in California, and vanished.
1/22
Finding stuff like this always inspires me to do genealogy, and what happened to this guy has always been a family mystery. So I dug in again on the "What Happened to William?" file. 2/22
One of the letters was from one of the brothers who had stayed home in Ontario, to one of his sisters, my great-great grandmother, who had moved with her husband and children to farm in Manitoba. There was the following passage: 3/22

It's a difficult thing to understand for normal, rational people who expect things to be a certain way. Let's take newspapers as an example. We expect newspapers to be devoted to giving the public an unbalanced account of the events of the day. 1/20
Newspapers used to be local, and usually small. Now 100s of newspapers are owned by a very few large corporate interests...And to the people owning the newspapers, they are an asset. They could be any asset. They could be making sleeping bags instead of newspapers. 2/20
The news isn't even the point. Newspapers make their money on advertising. They are not selling information to the public...They are selling your eyeballs to advertisers. So, the actual news, the quality of reporting, the accuracy, is of very limited interest to the owners. 3/20

There is so much happening now that is just not normal. And I am not talking about there being a pandemic.

I am talking about things like a Canadian MP calling on the Government of Canada to bow to an American Republican senator's demands. 1/18
What does "unilateral reopening of the US/Canada border" even mean? Is this US senator suggesting the American army should just march to the border crossings and force their way through? That's sort of what it sounds like. And a Canadian MP is supporting this? Not normal. 2/18
But then, Ms Rempel-Garner and other CPC MPs have a history of airing Canada's laundry on American TV and other media. 3/18
