🔭It is proven: black holes warp the very fabric of space.

🌌Astronomers have seen the back of a black hole for the first time, proving Albert Einstein's 1915 theory of general relativity right

Thread 🧵

🌎🔭An international team of researchers have used high-powered X-ray telescopes to study a supermassive black hole 800 million light years away
👁️They saw the usual hallmarks of a black hole…

⚡️But they also spotted light – in the form of X-rays – which was being emitted by the far side of the black hole
🔴It should be impossible to see light from the back of a black hole due to its incomprehensibly dense material...
📚However in 1915, Einstein’s theory of general relativity predicted that the gravitational pull of black holes is so enormous that they warp the very fabric of space, twisting magnetic fields and bending light...
🔎Experts accepted the theory, but have been unable to directly observe the phenomenon…

💡Until now
🔭The discovery was made possible thanks to modern telescopes and the development of highly sensitive instruments

🌡️🌧️Summer is rapidly becoming the season of heatwaves, wildfires and flash floods.

🔴The Met Office’s annual climate report sheds new light on the Great British subtropical summer we must soon learn to live with Image
☀️Last summer, in early August, temperatures hit 34C on six consecutive days, with five "tropical nights" where the mercury did not drop below 20C.

This made it one of the most significant heatwaves to affect southern England in the past 60 years...
