I just spent more time than I originally intended looking at how many people are hospitalized and dying from COVID in Israel, where over 80% of adults are fully vaccinated against COVID. 1/6
Israel conducted the fastest vaccination campaign against COVID so far. Over 80% of adults are fully vaccinated, which is why only 275 people are hospitalized with COVID in the ENTIRE country of 9 million people 2/6 ourworldindata.org/covid-hospital…
In a country of 9 million people, the high vaccination rate has saved numerous lives. Only 1 to 3 people are dying per day from COVID. 3/6

In comparison, Louisiana has a population of 4.6 million with only 37% fully vaccinated. Due to low vaccination rates, there are 1,620 patients hospitalized with COVID and 14-20 people dying per day, which tragically will continue to rise. 4/6 newsnodes.com/us_state/LA
On June 25, 2021 the Israeli government reinstated the indoor face mask rule amid increasing new cases of the delta variant, which is more infectious than previous strains. Fully vaccinated people were discovered to still be able to transmit the virus to others. 5/6
In sum, vaccinations work evinced by low hospitalization rates and deaths in Israel. However, fully vaccinated people can still transmit the virus to other people, especially indoors, which is why wearing masks in areas with uncontrolled outbreaks is important. 6/6
Remember vaccines are only one layer of defense against the #DeltaVariant
This thread was inspired by these headlines. As millions more people are vaccinated, we're going to see more breakthrough disease & death b/c vaccines are not 100% effective. Those individuals tend to be older than 65, have weakened immune systems or severe medical conditions.
The END! 💉😷🙏🏽

🧵@WHO updates on the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last week we saw an 8% increases in cases detected with more than 11 million reported, despite a significant reduction of testing occurring worldwide @mvankerkhove
99.9% of sequences provided in the last 30 days are #Omicron. Among those ~75% are BA.2 & 25% BA.1. All of these are variants of concern. However, our ability to track Omicron is compromised because testing is reduced. You can't sequence those who you do not test! @mvankerkhove
COVID-19 vaccines remain incredibly effective at preventing severe disease and death, including against Omicron @mvankerkhove

Omicron is a deadly virus. Former UFC star 41 y.o. Chris "The Crippler" Leben from San Diego CA is recovering from COVID after being on life support. He declined to talk about his vaccination status. This was his second battle with COVID #TheySurvivedCovid 10news.com/news/local-new…
“I was ready to tap out, and the reason I didn’t tap is because of my child … If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had the fight to get through those days,” said Leben.
There is a disinformation campaign that young people are not affected by COVID-19 and that #Omicron is mild. These are both incorrect. Vaccination against COVID-19 protects against severe disease.

There's no doubt that cases of COVID are decreasing, which is great! However to truly capture the seriousness of the current surge we must end the reclassification of COVID-19 hospitalizations based upon testing positive. I applaud this hospital system for at least providing an *
You should still be counted as a COVID-19 hospitalization after you test negative
