My wife and I decided to start watching “Farscape” on Amazon Prime this evening. I had heard of the show but knew absolutely nothing about it other than it being some sort of sci-fi series. I vaguely remembered the promos making it seem a little like Babylon 5 or similar. 1/

Anyway, the pilot episode started off pretty cheesy, but about halfway through I commented to my wife that some of the alien characters reminded me a lot of The Dark Crystal characters…they seemed very “Jim Henson-like”. 2/

Then, near the end of the pilot when it became clear that the premise was a half-dozen assorted alien species including one human dude, mostly escaped prisoners, thrown together and on the run from the authorities I commented that it felt vaguely Guardians of the Galaxy-ish. 3/

When the end credits hit, sure enough: Jim Henson Productions!

Afterwards I looked up the show on Wikipedia and voila: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farscape

(FWIW I was NOT tipped off about Henson being involved at the start as the pilot episode didn’t have any opening credits…it just starts right up.)

For some reason finding out it’s a Henson production *and* that it has an Australian studio makes me feel better about the cheesiness of the show so far. Then again, many pilot episodes of serious shows feel that way as well…it takes a bit for most shows to find their bearing.

I also immediately guessed the moment he showed up onscreen (before he said a single word) that the dude with the goatee was the villain because, you know, he has a goatee.

Anyway, I’m willing to give it a few episodes to gain my fandom. It was exactly that way for me with Babylon 5…I *hated* the first few episodes but it’s my wife’s favorite TV show so I grudgingly gave it another chance and the 5th or 6th episode hooked me in.
