Few DMs asking for tips getting into motorsports (as well as sport) as a graphic designer so heres a few things I'd be doing if I was trying to now.

(likely to apply to other fields too tbh)

The tweets/pics below just represent a journey from 2017 to now in 2021:

Not working in the sports industry/knowing Red Bull had a race team (and LOVING the fact they did) ➡️ working for Red Bull Racing

(its funny how things turned out)
"Of course, the guy from the LinkedIn advert is gonna recommend it!"

I hear you. I hear you. Seriously though, make yourself as visible as possible on there. Talk about positions you want/aiming for/why should you be hired/your skills etc

Show your work too.
Decision makers and hiring managers dwell on LinkedIn. You being visible increases your chances of employment and opens the door to being approached/considered by one of them.

Which brings me to my next point:
Make networking a habit.

Network like your life depends on it. Seriously. It's so important and it's a skill.

Learn to get used to (maybe) feeling uncomfortable about reaching out to strangers and opening a conversation with them.

Buttttt........
Give as much value to people as you can before expecting a return.

I get so many rude/blunt messages from people like "get me an internship, I want a job".

Not that I'm a hiring manager but politeness and not demanding things goes a long way.
Value exchanges go both ways.

Don't ask for too much, ask for something small and give more than you're asking for (i.e a job).

Get into their head and ask yourself 'what would be valuable to them?'.

Is it as simple as asking them for 15 minutes of their time for coffee?
Network with recruiters because, guess what - it's in their interest to have a pool of creatives that they can put into roles for their clients.

It's worth building relationships/connecting with recruiters for this reason.

Your mileage with recruiters may vary though 😅😅
Be proactive.

Underrated tip, but it's true. A lot of designers think that hash tagging and @-ing a team/athlete/league will get them noticed.

It definitely doesn't hurt, but think how many other people are doing the same thing.
Don't wait for it to happen, make it happen.

You can get every hashtag right, post every day, BEAT THE ALGORITHM, but it doesn't guarantee that you will get noticed by said team/athlete/league and then get offered a job.

Say it with me: Network.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable - I referenced this before, but it's a mindset that I think has got me this far.
Don't know how a tool works? Don't be scared of it, find a YouTube tutorial on how to use it.

Don't know why people use a certain program? Ask them!

Objectively look at your weaknesses as a designer and then go out of your way to make them your strength
As designer's we're all on a journey of getting better, improving and showing yourself growth.

Make this journey public and post about it. People love to see growth. Don't shy away from showing 'bad' work or unused concepts. Not every idea is great and that's ok.
One of the ways I learned to design was taking apart people's work and reverse engineering it.

How did they do that gradient? What's that technique? How do I achieve a similar look?

Put yourself in that headspace, but don't rip off someone else's work. No one likes that.
Ask for genuine feedback from other designers.

Do you want to get better? Or do you just want 🔥🔥🔥 emojis under your instagram post?

To be a good designer, you have to have a thick skin and be open to criticism and people not liking your work. You will survive. Honest!
Try to learn a new skill, a new tool, just about anything to do with design every single day.

Not only do you feel good about it, but it's the incremental progress and upward trend that honestly, is just the best feeling when you can look back and laugh at old work.
Wanna remind you that its actually okay to fail. We all do it and you aren't a failure as a result. Its a learning experience.

Ive had so many missed opportunities & failed attempts but you have to look past them and remember the bigger picture. One door closes another opens.
Back off to work - if I think of any more, I'll resume the thread later!
