Please join our campaign calling on Starbucks to #UpTheCup:

- their plastic-lined paper cups are NOT recyclable

- but truly recyclable cups are ALREADY used in UK, EU

#UpTheCup builds on past work (like @standearth's own Starbucks campaign).

However, another 5 years have passed.

Let's remind @Starbucks that citizens want this *actually* solved.

@standearth @Starbucks This #UpTheCup campaign is a direct result of our Environmental Journalism Awards:

A concerned source approached us seeking an introduction.

Why?

Media attention is *critical* to driving awareness, which drives change.

As we say, "Environmental Journalism Is Essential"
The paper cup issue has had a few small news cycles over the years.

Perhaps another campaign is tedious for the PR team at @StarbucksNews.

Independent of PR reasons, there are very strong *business + 💰* reasons for @starbucks to #UpTheCup

Our 1,000 person survey showed there is a real risk to NOT addressing this proactively.

@Kevin_Johnson ($SBUX CEO) or @MellodyHobson (Chair) might wish they got ahead of the issue before a @GretaThunberg or @AOC take note + generate mass outrage.

change.org/p/starbucks-up…
@Kevin_Johnson @MellodyHobson @GretaThunberg @AOC For $SBUX investors, why risk your #1 asset (an iconic consumer brand)?

One day, shareholder activists (like @EngineNo_1, @BillAckman, @DanielSLoeb1, or @jessecohn4) or ESG ratings firms might pressure you to change.

Why not be proactive and do the right thing?
Comments from our #UpTheCup petition provide anecdotes consistent with our survey data:

60% of consumers would reduce their purchases from @Starbucks if they learned their cups were not recyclable.

@Kevin_Johnson: That is a *MATERIAL* business risk

I feel honored to present the winners of our 2018 @SEALAwards Environmental Journalism Awards. Without exaggeration, their work is the tip of the spear in fighting climate change. Why? Thread follows 1/ sealawards.com/environmental-…
Having an informed & engaged public is required to make the political, lifestyle & societal changes needed to mitigate (let alone beat) #climatechange. These great writers fight a battle on many fronts. Translating science & policy research into digestible content is HARD /2
I read 100s of applications for @SEALAwards Research Grant program receives (thanks to partner @BeInstrumentl). My brain hurts afterward. Explaining research like this - to our gnat-like attention spans - on a deadline & w/ few resources requires deep & irreplaceable skills /3
