Yesterday, @TuckerCarlson aired a video from the Hungarian-Serbian border, investigating “how #Hungary solved its border crisis”. Some of the footage caught my eye, so I thought I would offer a quick fact check. A thread.
2/7 He began by claiming that the Hungarian border fence effectively ended illegal migration into the country. In fact, HU police arrested 54 000 illegal migrants from January to August this year, threefold increase from 2020. That does not include the numbers that evaded arrest.
3/7 Carlson is amazed by the “effectiveness” of the Hungarian system, when seeing migrants escorted back to Serbia through a door in the fence. What he saw is actually called pushback and it is unlawful.
4/7 Pushbacks wee ruled unlawful and in breach of the prohibition of collective expulsion by the European Court of Human Rights. The Hungarian police carried out nearly 72,000 such pushbacks since July 2016.
5/7 He says the Hungarian border proves that straightforward immigration policy works and does not require a lot of money or high-tech tools. According to official police statistics, the total cost of border defence between 2015 and 2019 was 408 billion HUF (1.1 billion EUR).
6/7 He praised the cleanliness of the border, not seeing people suffering. HU had to close its controversial transit zones last year after the ruling of the European Court of Justice. Before that, some asylum-seekers have been unlawfully detained in the zones for 300 or 400 days.
7/7 Added Bonus: Carlson recalls a conversation with a Hungarian minister at the border who in fact is Balázs Orbán, deputy minister and state secretary.

So here it is: #Hungarian PM Viktor #Orban announced a 5 question referendum about what he calls "the future of Hungarian children”. The questions are the following, (thanks for the translation @ivanlnagy )
1. Do you support that children shall encounter sexual educational content that shows different sexual orientations without parental consent?
2. Do you support that sex changing procedures shall be promoted to children?
3. Do you support that such procedures shall be made available for children?
1/10 Hungarian authorities have so far authorized 5 different coronavirus vaccines in the country (AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, Sputnik V, Sinopharm). Let's see how the vaccination campaign is going in a country that has chosen to take a different path from the EU. A thread. 👇
2/10 So far, 292 627 Hungarians have received their jabs, 113 570 even got their second dose. These are Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. So, no matter how hard the government is criticizing Brussels, the fact is: without the EU, the total number of people vaccinated in HU would be 0.
3/10 With a population of 9,8 million, this puts the percentage of vaccinated people around 3% (including those under 18). This is slightly better than the EU average.
When you think you’ve seen it all in #Hungary, along comes Szilárd Demeter, ministerial commissoner, key figure in PM Orban's culture war and writes an op-ed saying “Europe is the gas chamber of George Soros; we are the new Jews”, referring to PL, HU and #RuleOfLaw mechanism.
I often face dilemma whether to tweet about the hate speech that has taken over our public sphere, but there are times when it just crosses the red line. I won’t post the original article, here is the summary : hvg.hu/itthon/2020112…
Demeter also compares holocaust survivor Soros to Adolf Hitler. “Soros is the liberal Führer. His liberarian (sic!) army deifies him in a more servile way then once did Hitler’s own”
