Remembering Gopinath Bordoloi on his death anniversary: The man who fought for #Assam to be a part of #India (thread)

Why should we celebrate him?

1. He singlehandedly fought the Muslim League and their intentions to club Assam into East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). (1)

2. He staged an inner revolt within the Congress party backed by Mahatma Gandhi when Nehru and co neglected Assam following the Cabinet Mission Plan (which potentially would have clubbed us with East Pakistan).

3. He even neutralised the idea among few Assamese people who believed in the idea of separation from India and creating an independent Assam nation.

4. He was a pro-tribes and worked with B R Ambedkar to forward the spirit of the autonomous rule of tribes while drafting the Constitution.

Instead what has happened?

Bordoloi in popular culture has been reduced to an airport name, who is remembered only during his death anniversary.
Political parties try to evoke or appropriate him but no one tries to follow his non-compromising ideology of Assam first.

What is required?

To immediately bring back history attached with Bordoloi to the school curriculum. His contribution to nation-building will inspire the youth to understand the sacrifices when he had to fight with many enemies of Assam at the same time.

This is the motivation for the youth to take this beautiful state forward. From my own personal experience, reading about him has made the urge to do something for my land increase manifold. For that reason, Bordoloi needs to be brought back to the popular culture.

Because Gopinath Bordoloi is the hero Assam deserves, and also the one it needs right now.
