1/6 Iran’s President Raisi, in his speech at swearing-in ceremony at Majlis, signals intention to resume negotiations in Vienna; no anti-US rhetoric; accent on diplomacy and balanced relationships. Excerpts:
2/6 The will of the people was independence and resistance to the extravagance of the arrogant and oppressive powers. At the same time, one must be committed to constructive and extensive interaction with the whole world.
3/6 ‘We use all the tools of national power, including diplomacy and intelligent interaction with the world, to ensure the national interests of the Islamic Republic of Iran.’
4/6 The nuclear program is completely peaceful. The Islamic Republic, according to the fatwa of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, prohibits nuclear weapons and such weapons have no place in the defence strategy of the Islamic Republic.
5/6 The policy of pressure and sanctions will not cause the Iranian people to give up pursuing their legal rights, including the right to development. Sanctions against Iran must be lifted and we will support any diplomatic plan that achieves this goal.
6/6 The world is changing and the interests of nations depend on understanding the new world and strategic interaction with emerging powers, and a successful foreign policy will be a balanced foreign policy.

1/5 US state dept spokesman Ned Price reg Iran (5/7/2021): “If President Raisi is genuine in his determination to see the sanctions lifted, well, that is precisely what’s on the table in Vienna… we’re attempting to see if we can resume mutual compliance…
2/5 “You just cited President Raisi’s statement about wishing to see that sanctions relief come into play once again. That might suggest that there’s an appetite on the part of the new Iranian Government to engage in this diplomacy.
3/5 “We certainly hope that’s the case, because we believe profoundly that it remains in our interest – in the interests of our allies and partners – to see Iran’s nuclear program once again permanently and verifiably restricted.”
1/5 Here is a realistic assessment of Raisi presidency. Frankly, Biden's team mishandled the negotiations at Vienna due to their lack of understanding of Iran's situation and inexperience in dealing with Iran.
2/5 Lifting sanctions will help Raisi but that is only one of facet of Iran’s malaise - perhaps, not even the most important. Therefore, he’ll be interested in negotiations but not at any cost.
Very smart move by Imran Khan to mark distance from likely Taliban takeover & to prevail upon Biden to pressure Ghani to make way for interim govt when they meet up on Friday.
Imran Khan hopes to forestall any blame from US for suffering such humiliating defeat in Afghanistan. But how could Pakistan possibly wash its hands off and walk away at this point putting all blame on Americans?
Raisi quote: "We will pursue interaction with the whole world and all the world states under broad and balanced interaction in foreign policy. We will not allow negotiations for negotiations and will not allow negotiations to turn into talks of attrition,
but every meeting should be accompanied by results. We will continue contacts if they yield results for the people in line with lifting restrictions..”
