Thread: I want to tell you a story about someone marvelous.
This photo is from Festival of the Rose, August 12, 2017 -- Kirsten / Zhivana learned to spin on a drop spindle from me a month previously. 1/
2/. It was the first time I got to teach a young mom with a young toddler to spin... And we got to quickly use, "Drop the spinning, grab the baby" all afternoon between lessons.
3/ That was only a story of theory in all my previous years teaching. And it made us both gleeful all day to actually use that in practice as she would scoop up Finn, keeping him out of the way of swords and rapier fighters.
Two Threads here: Abby's commentary on the problems in the fiber community, and the referenced thread on the problems in the equestrian community. Click through and read both of them.
Why am I sending you on two niche threads about the problems with white supremacy and bias in niche communities? Because it's likely YOU are in a niche community and it's past time we all look at what we excuse and what we ignore.
I've often said that it doesn't matter what label you wear or which group you join, you're going to find the same distribution of humans in every group. There are going to be people you like, people you don't. There are going to be problems in every group.
THREAD: I grew up as the eldest daughter of a city cop in Akron, OH in the 1970s. Dad was also OH National Guard, although post- Kent State shootings. He had been in the Army in Vietnam. As a white girl in OH in the 1970s with a cop for a dad, there was a lot that sheltered me.
It took decades before I could really grapple with the supremacist patterns that pervade most US police and sheriff departments. If you're raised thinking that only criminals get the attention of cops, you REALLY DON'T SEE the problems.
BUT GOOD GRIEF our law enforcement agencies have been brutal for all of history. We NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS and then we need to MASSIVELY DISMANTLE this.
I don't know how my Dad would feel watching the current state of the country. I'm kind of glad he missed this.
This ACTUAL CHART put out by the State of Georgia is HORRIBLE on so MANY points. I was nearly screaming at the TV last night because I saw the problems right away. I'm sure others have helped sort this out, but here's my version too. #Thread 1/
Top 5 Counties with the Greatest Number of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases ... 2/
"The chart below represents the most impacted counties over the past 15 days and the number of cases over time. The table below also represents the number of deaths and hospitalizations in each of those impacted counties." 3/
This is an odd list. It's possibly self-indulgent. But legitimately, I was beginning to doubt my track record as an Extrovert, because I was taking this Quarantine fairly calmly for myself. Part of that is having been VERY AWARE that I am EXTRAORDINARILY LUCKY. 1/
I have two other grown humans in the house with me, both of whom are fairly well-adjusted humans. They can both drive. They can both take care of themselves. They provide excellent conversation. And they both have been willing to do 100% of the shopping. 2/
I have had the luxury of a full-time job (and approved overtime when needed) to work from home and go nowhere. I have the luxury of a functioning postal service, electricity, water, wifi, and a working bank account. 3/
