A Level results day.

Shout-out to all my HE digital homies, already up and mainlining coffee.
NOT YOU RUSSELL GROUP OR OXBRIDGE. NOT YOU.
And remember: your exam results are an important milestone, but they DO NOT define you. And success is always relative.

Enormous congratulations if you get your expected grades. Well done!

But even if you don't, DON'T WORRY. It's just a bump in a very long road.

You👏Got👏this
And if you didn't get exactly what you needed for your chosen institution, DON'T PANIC.

Speak to them. See what they say. And even if they say no, DON'T WORRY.

It's their loss. Not yours. Take a deep breath, and shop around.

There are other unis out there who'll welcome you ♥️
Is it what you planned for? No. And that's scary. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO BE UPSET AND A BIT SCARED.

But failure is part of life. And sometimes you can do your absolute best and still lose.

It's not a mark against you. It just means you need to change the direction you travel a bit.
But the outcome can still be the same.

You WILL go to uni this year (if that's what you still want).

You WILL get to study what you love (unless you want to try something a bit different now).

And every single one of us working on Clearing today can't wait to help you. ♥️

Couple of peeps asked how I ended up as a developer then web/digital strategy leader after doing these A levels.

Because they taught me how to think, analyse and plan logically.

They didn't teach me tech. They taught me the most marketable skill in the world: Problem solving.
Once, in an interview, I was asked:

"Why don't you have a degree in Web Design or Digital?"

My answer was simple:

"Because they didn't exist when I started doing this."

But I was in that room, having been asked to apply for that position, BECAUSE of my study choices.
Those A Levels and my degree (History, with Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies @YourStMarys ) taught me transferable, broadly applicable skills.

Skills that turned out to be perfect for an industry that didn't really EXIST until I was already at uni.

History, Ancient History, Latin, Christian Ethics & Religious Studies.
[insert opinion about this is why it's important poor kids have access to the same education opportunities as rich kids, and not just be brought up thinking they have to study something that gets them a job, here]
For those asking, Christian Ethics & Religious Studies was:

1) Basics of philosophy/ethics and how Christianity absorbed/co-opts. Everything from Plato to J.S. Mill
2) Old/New Testament and how to CRITICALLY assess them
3) In depth look at another religion (Sikhism for me)

I know, kid. But some of us just can't help being gorgeous. It's just a burden we have to bear. Even if all we really want out of life is snacks and warm duvets.

It's all just part of growing up.

Counting Crows 'Raining in Baltimore' pops up on the random rotation and instantly jumps me back 20 years of my life emotionally.
If you ever saw a random guy wandering about in a long black trenchcoat at 3am down Hounslow West in 2002, looking emotionally lost, listening to Counting Crows and consoling himself with fried chicken... It was probably me.
Don't hate me for who I am. Blame Napster and the Matrix.

WRITER'S REMINDER!

If you need to do a lot of typing, DON'T centre your keyboard on your bodyline, if it has a numpad.

Offset it to the right so the alpha keys are centred on you.

Reduces typing fatigue from twisting/over extending while typing.
If you're not sure where to align it, just centre the spacebar on your body. It's an easy guide to wear you want the alpha keys to actually be.

The net result should be your forearms pointing inward at the same angle as each other, with both elbows sticking out slightly.
I'm honestly surprised how many people don't spot this, and often end up with a really sore right arm or left shoulder as a result.
