First is calculative (Ganit/Siddhanta), second is Jatak (Hora) and third is Samhita (whatever is left comes under it. It is nowadays known as Mundane astrology). In his treatise, Varamihir clearly mentioned that a Jyotish ought to deeply study Samhita (that included omens).

In Valmiki Ramayan, several characters noticed omens before events. Muhurta Chintamani mentions several omens.
In short, a prudent Jyotishi should not only be good at calculative and predictive parts, he should also know Samhita and observe omens with sound mind.

Since I mentioned branches of Jyotish, let's learn them shortly.
Many of our texts consider Jyotish to have three branches: Siddhanta (calculative), Jatak (Hora/predictive) and Samhita (Mundane). Out of them, Mundane is most vast and should be studied deeply.

Due to division into thee branches, Jyotish was called Triskandha Shashtra. Many originators have concurred to this.
However, with passage of time, two more branches got added to it: Shakun (Omen) and Prashna Jyotish. Hence Jyotish has become Panchskandhatmak Shahstra now.
