The National Defence Academy recruitment process is held by the UPSC twice each year (NDA 1 and NDA 2).
Candidates who qualify for the SSB after the UPSC NDA written exams (paper 1 - maths and paper 2 - General Ability Test or GAT) and clear the SSB undergo rigorous training.
During the entire duration of the training in the service academies such as the IMA, the Gentleman Cadets receive a monthly stipend of INR 56,100 (starting pay in level 10).
The stipend for the Cadets undergoing training in the Indian Military and the equivalent ranks in the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy receive the same monthly stipend.
After successfully completing the NDA training at the service academies, the salary of NDA candidates in the pay matrix of the officer commissioned will be fixed in the first Cell of Level 10.
The Pay Matrix for NDA officers is as follows:
For the ranks from Lieutenant (Lt.) to Major:
Lieutenant - Level 10 (ranges from INR 56,100 to INR 1,77,500)
Captain - Level 10 B (ranges from INR 61,300 to INR 1,93,900)
Major - Level 11 (ranges from INR 69,400 to INR 2,07,200)
Lt Colonel - Level 12A (ranges from INR 1,21,200 to INR 2,12,400)
Colonel - Level 13 (ranges from INR 1,30,600 to INR 2,15,900)
Brigadier - Level 13A (ranges from INR 1,39,600 to INR 2,17,600)
Major General - Level 14 (ranges from INR 1,44,200 to INR 2,18,200)
For the rank of Lt. General HAG Scale - Level 15 (ranges from INR 1,82,200 to INR 2,24,100)
For the rank of HAG + scale - Level 16 (ranges from INR 2,05,400 to INR 2,24,400))
For the rank of VCOAS/ Army Cdr/ Lt. Gen (NFSG) - Level 17 (INR 2,25,000 - fixed)
For the rank of COAS - Level 18 (INR 2,50,000 - fixed)
Breakdown of Allowances:
Apart from the basic pay, a UPSC NDA enjoys ample allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), Special Forces Allowance, etc, and countless perks from time to time.
Dearness Allowance (DA) - Admissible at the same rates & under the same conditions as applicable to the civilian personnel from time to time.
Para Allowance - INR 10,500 Per Month
Para Jump Instructor Allowance - INR 10,500 Per Month
Para Reserve Allowance - INR 2,625 Per Month
Project Allowance - INR 3,400 Per Month
Special Forces Allowance - INR 25,000 Per Month
Kit Maintenance Allowances - INR 20,000 Paid out annually along with Uniform allowance/ Dress Allowances
Technical Allowance (Tier-I) - INR 3,000 Per Month
Technical Allowance (Tier-II) - INR 4,500 Per Month
Apart from the aforementioned allowances, NDA officers have also entitled to the following location-dependent allowances such as:
Field Area Allowances: INR 10,500 per month
High Altitude Allowances: NDA officers posted to Siachen are entitled to Siachen Allowance of INR 42,500 per month.
Transport Allowance (TPTA): For level 9 and above - INR 7,200 along with Dearness Allowance (DA) thereon per month (for class X cities - formerly Class A1/A region/cities - and a few other regions/cities.
Allowances for Flying:
Army Aviators or Pilots serving in the Army Aviation Corps are entitled to a monthly flying allowance of INR 25,000 (R1H1 of the Risk & Hardship Matrix).
Children Education Allowance: NDA officers enjoy an amount of INR 2250 per month per child (applicable for the two eldest surviving children only). This allowance is admissible from Nursery to 12th Class.
Hostel Subsidy: NDA officers enjoy an amount of INR 6,750 per month per child (applicable for two eldest surviving children only) This allowance is admissible from Nursery to 12th Class.
Ration in Kind: NDA officers currently working in field areas and peace areas are entitled to ration in kind every month.
Allowances in case of mishappenings or in case of death or disablement:
In the event of a disablement NDA officers are entitled to the following allowances:
Monthly Ex-gratia amount of INR 9,000 per month.
Constant Attendant Allowance (CCA) of INR 6750 per month for 100% physical disability on the recommendation of an Invaliding Medical Board (IBM).
Ex-gratia disability award of INR 16200 per month shall be payable in addition for 100% of disability during the period of disablement subject to prorate reduction if the degree of disablement is less than 100%.
In the event of a death the following allowances are paid out to the next of kin:
Ex-gratia amount of INR 12.5 lakhs to the NoK (Next of Kin).
The Ex-gratia amount of INR 9000 per month to the Next of Kin (NoK)
