An Army trooper working on peace and development initiatives in Barangay Lahug, Tapaz, Capiz was brutally murdered by CPP-NPA-NDF, on August 11, just as the nation is showing its solidarity with the international community in commemorating International Humanitarian Law Month.
Killed was Corporal Frederic K. Villasis, member of the 12th Infantry Battalion, who was deployed to conduct Community Support Program (CSP) activities. Villasis and some barangay officials of Lahug were reportedly flagged down by members of the New People's Army (NPA)
According to Major Cenon Pancito III, spokesperson of the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID), Villasis was onboard a motorcycle with Analyn Giganto, a councilwoman in Lahug, around 11:30 AM yesterday.
The two were headed to the town hall to borrow an ambulance for sick persons in the barangay, said Pancito.
However, around 40 armed men blocked their way and took the soldier, leaving an unharmed Giganto behind.
The rebels tortured Villasis. His motorcycle was also set on fire.
He was later killed execution-style; fatally shot three times from behind while both his hands were tied at the back. Corporal Villasis leaves behind a wife, and two young children.
The Bayanihan Brigade is determined to not let the sacrifice of Corporal Villasis be in vain.
"His murder is nothing but a cowardly act of desperation by the Communist Terrorist Group who have been continuously losing their mass-based support in the island of Panay,” said Brigadier General Marion Sison, Commander of the 301st Brigade vows that justice will be served.
“More than ever, this is the time for all of us in Panay Island to come together to end the local armed conflict. Let us honor his sacrifices and heroism by working with the government in our quest for lasting peace,” BGEN Sison added.
“We are really saddened. Tutulong lang sana ang ating tao pero pinatay nila,” Major Cenon Pancito III, spokesperson of the 3rd ID said. “We condemn the killing. What they did was summary execution. Binaril na patalikod. We won’t stop seeking justice for our soldier.”
