COVID Update: What @RonDeSantisFL & @GovAbbott are doing is working as expected. Unfortunate calls this week have confirmed this.

And we are all paying the price. 1/
Abbott & DeSantis prohibited colleges & schools & local authorities from requiring 4 things:
-Vaccines
-Masks
-People being asked for vaccine credentials
-Requirements to submit to testing 2/
As the school year starts, that leaves local politicians, parents, teachers, students & coaches in a tough tough spot.

And it leaves millions of kids under 12 & those who are immunocompromised for one reason or another much more exposed. 3/
If you are a parent or teacher or student, you may want to give this a listen. It’s intended to provide all the details that can be helpful. 4/

I have spoken this week with college sports leagues, universities, schools & businesses in these states.

-All of them say they want to do the right thing with some combination of testing, vaccines & masks
-None of them will. Very specific & clear threats are preventing them. 5/
In fact one college told me that the governors are doubling down, searching for “loopholes.” They are issuing new EOs to prevent common sense steps (as Abbott did below). 6/
They are threatening the withholding of state funds to people who ask for people to show vaccination status or require masks.

I’m wondering how they would react to the fed government withholding funds based on things they think they should control locally.

They would whine.7/
So while their strategy is getting results, they are doubling down on it.

Let’s look at some of the results…. 8/
In the face of this, who wouldn’t want to make adjustments? They’ve thrown the people of the state in the water, tied their hands, and said “people are free to swim.” 9/
We do have answers:

-Vaccines offer an 8:1 reduction in COVID cases
-Yes, COVID deaths are much better than last year but a lot of people are still dying needlessly
-Even cloth masks if required indoors prevent the majority of inhalation of the virus. 9/
Local jurisdictions are prevented from promising their students, their employees, their customers— and all of their kids by extension— that they are doing their best to keep them safe. 10/
Their peaks will be higher, their hospitalizations will be higher, deaths will increase & more people will suffer.

And they prevent people from acting. 11/
Is requiring you not to be contagious before being around large crowds of other people, millions of whom have no defense, the principal they really want to fight for?

It’s so important to them that they’re willing to sacrifice for it. Sacrifice us that is. /end

COVID Update: Where we stand in vaccinations in the US.

The path to our goal is clear. 1/
58% of Americans have had at least their first shot.

To be on par with England & Israel and to face off against Delta, we ought to unite behind a 90% goal.

Here’s how to get there. 2/
17% are ineligible to be vaccinated or vaccines don’t fully protect them. (14% are < 13, 3% are immunocompromised). 3/

COVID Update: The increasingly assertive position of requiring vaccinations has clear moral grounds.

The view of DeSantis that vaccination status isn’t anyone’s business has a lot to answer for. 1/
Earlier today @BilldeBlasio introduced a policy that to enter certain venues like restaurants & gyms, proof of vaccination would be required. 2/
People fall into 3 categories with differing interests.
Group 1- Those who are vaccinated
Group 2- Those who can’t get vaccinated or get fulsome protection from a vaccine if they do
Group 3- Those who choose not to get vaccinated 3/

VACCINATION UPDATE: 70% of all adults have now had their first shot.

Vaccines are up today 25% over last week.

Now we now need to build on the momentum to do more. 1/
What’s happening?

It may not be over-simplifying things to say that when the crisis seemed over, getting vaccinated seemed more optional. 2/
It also meant that some Republican leaders were willing to play politics or allow others to tolerate their colleagues playing politics.

A good way to take credit from Biden is to question vaccines. What’s the harm after all? Cases were declining. 3/

COVID Update: An internal document from CDC shows Delta is a whole “new war.”

First real estimates of spread & breakthrough cases. And a clear sense of why CDC policies are changing.

More here soon. 1/
Point 1: Vaccines work. They dramatically reduce the risk of cases (8x) & even more so serious cases (25x). But they don’t work perfectly.

With 165 million fully vaccinated people, they estimate 7,000 breakthroughs/day. 2/
A thorough discussion of breakthrough cases & vaccine efficacy is here in this discussion with what Pfizer sees in the data. Worth listening to to understand. 3/

COVID Update: What did President Biden announce today and why.

The story. Follow if interested here. 1/
President Biden’s announcement today that federal workforces and on-site contractors must demonstrate that they are not infectious is as much about ensuring safe workplaces as it is driving up vaccinations. 2/
The federal workforce, over 2 million civilians, serves the public. And his commitment to keep them safe while they do that is one of his commitments as a leader. 3/

As of this week, the dam is beginning to break publicly so I will comment. Google just announced a vaccination requirement, the VA has, CA has, NY has and others are on the path.

Including Biden publicly commenting that this is being considered 4 all federal ees & contractors.2/
Let me step back cover something:

First, what are we talking about here?

We’re talking about safe workplaces.

What we’re not talking about?

Violating anybody’s individual liberties. 3/
No one is requiring anyone to get vaccinated. What these leaders are doing is requiring people to demonstrate they are not contagious.

Either by getting vaccinated or by showing a negative test result several times/week. 4/
