2021 GCSE results have been the topic of much contention...

🧠However one statistic is certain: the girls outperform the boys.

Why are girls brainer? Science has a clear and clever answer

📑If this story sounds familiar, that’s because it is.

Prof Alan Smithers, the report’s author, noted that ever since GCSEs replaced O-levels almost four decades ago, girls had consistently outperformed boys
telegraph.co.uk/education-and-…
When this year’s A-level results were published on Tuesday, the gender gap was likewise found to have reached its highest level in a decade.

The rate of A* and A grades stood at:
👧 46.4% for girls
👦41.7% for boys
Prof Smithers: "When they leapt ahead in GCSEs, it was said that it was because they worked harder.

"Now, with teacher assessment, the impression is that they are favoured by the teachers.

⁉️"Why can’t we accept it is just that girls are cleverer?”
telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/08/1…
So is he right?

Is it time to accept that girls really are just somehow naturally smarter than boys?

"As someone who has long argued against the idea of a 'male' and 'female' brain, I find this idea problematic"✍️ neuroscientist Gina Rippon
"My work as a neuroscientist has aimed to debunk the idea that females and males have different brains.

"There is no neuroscientific basis for the claim that the brains of girls and boys are hardwired to make them inevitably better or worse at certain tasks"✍️ Rippon
✅By the age of 7 or 8, girls are expected to do better in SATS assessments.

To do well, you need to be organised; work neatly and show your working-out.

By this age, the average girl has been socially conditioned to perform well at such tasks and praised for following rules
When it comes to boys, Rippon has seen teachers are often happy when they hand in any work at all.

"Even if it’s last-minute, messily written and on a scrappy piece of paper.

❌"Expectations of them are lower, whether or not the teachers themselves are conscious of it"
➡️Fast forward to the GCSE years and what do we see?
Are girls simply “cleverer”, or have they, over time, become better at fulfilling the requirements of the assessment system?

"The latter seems more likely" says neuroscientist Gina Rippon
telegraph.co.uk/education-and-…
Dr Eliot, neuroscience professor at Chicago Medical School, published a meta-analysis on studies that looked for differences between male and female brains.

She found no difference, once you corrected for size.

🧠Further evidence that the idea of female or male brains is a myth
🛑"When it comes to girls’ superior GCSE performance, it’s important we don’t become complacent.

"They may do better at school, but they still fare worse in the workplace.

"Clearly something is going wrong"
🛑"Nor can we afford to be indifferent about boys.

"In congratulating girls for doing so well in their GCSEs, we must be wary of neglecting to help the boys perform well next time.

"We need to ask what would make underperforming students of either sex do better"
Exam results once again show a gender gap.

Neuroscientist @ginarippon1 takes aim at the suggestion that girls are naturally superior⬇️

Gen Zers have done it again... they've changed the rules just as we have got our head around the last set of them.

🎯The target this time: emojis.

Here’s how to make sense of them (or at least try to)

🧵👇
telegraph.co.uk/women/life/smi…
There’s bad news if you’re over 30 and believe your habit of sprinkling communications with emoji confetti would somehow make you seem cooler, younger, more in touch...

❌You thought you understood the game - but Gen Z have only gone and declared war

Here's the ones to avoid👇
🙂The smiley face

The one you thought was untouchable; that could never come to signify a male appendage without you realising.

A smiley face emoji deployed in a text or email can come across as patronising or passive-aggressive to teens and 20-somethings

💳Under what circumstances is it unreasonable to split a bill in a restaurant?

@MrGuyKelly considers some quandaries...👇

1⃣If you didn’t drink

🍹If everyone else had cocktails, wine, shots, then bought the waiting staff a Limoncello...

...but all you had was a sparkling water and some fresh mint tea, you have a right to feel aggrieved
💰Guy says the solution could be to split it evenly, but only if the drinkers’ total is within £5 of yours. If more, kick up a fuss

Do you agree?

🔴The Delta variant has wrecked hopes of herd immunity, warn scientists.

Experts tell MPs there is no way of stopping Covid spreading through the entire population, as they call for an end to mass testing.

Thread ~👇

✋Scientists say it's time to accept that there was no way of stopping the virus spreading through the entire population, and monitoring people with mild symptoms was no longer helpful
💉Prof Pollard, who led the Oxford vaccine team, said it was clear that the delta variant can infect people who have been vaccinated.

Which made herd immunity impossible to reach.

🇩🇪It comes as Germany announce the end of free testing, with the provision set to stop from Oct 11
