The episodes where Barchie were featured and heavily promoted (5x05-5x07) did on average 5% better than the episodes with Bughead (5x02-5x03) and 10% better than those with Varchie (5x08-5x11).
Bughead and Varchie were both together in 5x01, however that .62 number is a bit misleading and inflated as it was the premiere after a year-long hiatus.
Even then, 5x05 (Barchie shower sex scene) and 5x06 (Barchie car sex scene) still came close with .58 and .57.
Comparatively, 5x11 was promoted and hyped as a Varchie and Bughead episode given the plot pf Jughead's disappearance and Veronica/Archie catching criminals
It was the lowest rated epsiode with .44 - and that's after a 5 month hiatus.
People didn't watch because it's the same.
It's now the lowest rated episode this season, only slightly beaten by 5x08 which had blowback from TV Critics on Riverdale going back to the status quo.
Maybe in 2017 Bughead and Varchie were popular, but that's 4 years ago.
We're in 2021 and the numbers don't lie - people want a mix up.
And S5 isn't an outlier. Note that in S4 episodes 4x15 - 4x16 included the Jughead fake-death resolution BUT also the Barchie fake dating, it was able to sustain a .66. It dripped after the musical episode 4x17, only to soar back up to .66 again when promoting Barchie again.
There have only been two seasons where Barchie has been treated as an actual possibility and both times it brought in more viewers. No data backs up this thought that having not Bughead/Varchie is hurting the show. If anything, we're seeing the opposite! The Barchie bump is real.
I really couldn’t make a thread about the Archie/Betty/Veronica love triangle in S5 without breaking down the romantic scenes for Varchie, too.
The Six Stages of Romance for Varchie S5 (So Far!)
I’m going to assume by this point everyone has read my other threads. If not, this blog by Karen Woodward breaks down these six scenes and why any love story must have them. blog.karenwoodward.org/2016/10/6-scen…
Also, we’re only focusing on S5. Someone else can do S1-S4, but it ain't me.
The six stages are:
#1. The Lovers Meet
#2. The First Kiss/First Intimate Moment
#3. The Confession of Love
#4. The Lovers Break Up
#5. The Proof of Love
#6. The Lovers Reunite
As of 5x11, Archie and Veronica are between Stage 4 and Stage 5 (same spot as Barchie and Jabitha)
The Six Stages of Romance for Barchie S5 (So Far!)
Reminder that six stages are:
#1. The Lovers Meet
#2. The First Kiss/First Intimate Moment
#3. The Confession of Love
#4. The Lovers Break Up
#5. The Proof of Love
#6. The Lovers Reunite
Before we start, I'm focusing on S5 for this thread because even though Barchie has the longest friendship in canon, the time skip acted as a reset for every romantic relationship.
There's def threads that folks can do for S1-S4 and S4 went through Stages 1-5 in two epsiodes.
#1. The Lovers Meet: Not every Lovers Meet scene is a meet-cute like what I described in my Jabitha breakdown. Sometimes it's the Lovers Meet Again if they already knew the other.
For Barchie, they hit this stage when Archie called Betty first to come back to Riverdale in 5x04.
Here's my analysis that the Barchie Bump is real and anyone who says that Barchie brings in fewer views than Bugvarchie isn't looking at the data. threadreaderapp.com/thread/1426073…
Here's the rub: Even if those on Twitter want to ignore the rating changes and push these false claims, TV Execs don't and they're the ones who make the calls and work with crews and showrunners.
The low numbers are hurting this show.
Riverdale scored early renewal in Feb. By July CW announced only 5 eps as a "mini-series" and had its DAY AND TIME MOVED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 5 YEARS.
#1. The Lovers Meet
#2. The First Kiss/First Intimate Moment
#3. The Confession of Love
#4. The Lovers Break Up
#5. The Proof of Love
#6. The Lovers Reunite
Currently, Jabitha is between stages 4 and 5.
#1. The Lovers Meet: the lovers meet for the first time. This scene is sometimes referred to as the “meet-cute.” It’s almost always the inciting incident of their story.
For Jabitha, it's 5x05 when Jughead needs a job and asks Tabitha to be a waiter and she says no.
This is about the Citizen Lodge episode - makes sense considering it's going to be entirely a flashback with the cast playing their parents + Mark's kid playing young Hiram.
I know a lot of people don't care about Hiram, but I'm excited for next week - especially after rewatching the start of the time jump.
Everyone always complains about Riverdale "not having a sensible plot" - but this season DOES have a plot that makes sense!
Hiram is destroying Riverdale, and everyone thinks it's for the Sodale Project. It's not JUST that (as Reggie says in 5x07) - it's because there's palladium under the town.
Hiram thought the prison that replaced Southside High was it. Now there's some under the Blossom's estate.
