This pioneer #14CAMSdating was carried out on a sample of pigment from a black punctuation of this wall๐โซ๏ธ. The analysis was executed by H. Valladas, H. Cachier and M. Arnol of #CNRS (Laboratory Gif-sur-Yvette). RESULT: 14290 +-180 BP
The Spectrometric Mass Accelerator (AMS) applied on radiocarbon analysis revolutionized the Archeology (and of the Paleolithic Art study, of course!). This first dating was carried out in #Tandetron accelerator and with only 0.80 mg of datable carbon (sample AFTER pretreatment).
Currently, samples smaller is possible dating (only 0.3-0.00025 grs of pure Carbon are needed - according to #BetaAnalytic).
The amount Carbon (not charcoalโ๏ธ) depends of the pure of sample. A charcoal "more cleanedโ (eg, without organic contamination) will have less reduction of sample๐งช๐ฉโ๐ฌ(less intensive pretreatment will be need). So, the #Anthracology help to select an optimal sample for dating๐ฌ
๐๐ธSEM photo of a paleolithic charcoal contaminate with fungal hyphae (modern Carbon).
The anthracological analysis before dating (especially to avoid dating migrated charcoal in stratigraphy) has been defended since the the 70's of s.XX.
โ๏ธHowever, it is necessary to insist in making this analysis before dating. Especially, this "essential pretreatment" is still too unusual in #InternalArchaeologicalContexts and in #PaleolithicArt pigments. ๐
In Cougnac cave, the first anthracological study on a pigment from Paleolithic Art also was developed. This was made by the anthracologist J.L.Vernet (University of Montpellier). A sample from female megaceros motif was analyzed๐and identified as Gymnosperm, possibly pine ๐ฒ
The anthracological study does not destroy the sample to be dated or contaminate it, besides it can inform us of possible contaminations that could disturb the dating result.
Therefore, prior to C14 AMS dating,๐ฌ#charcoalanalysis๐ฌ please!!!
We want to end this post stand out the figure of M.Lorblanchet. A true pioneer #interdisciplinaryresearch of "decorated" caves! Merci!!
๐In this book you can find a compendium of many of his works. We have used this to do this post:
โ๏ธ Do you want to visit this magic site, no?
โก๏ธ You can do it! (it's open to visits for small groups): grottesdecougnac.com
๐บ๏ธCualventi Cave is located in the district of Perelada (Oreรฑa, Alfoz de Lloredo, Cantabria), 2 km from Altamira. The cave opens in the wall of a wide and shallow doline, inside a small valley close to the coast.
โ๏ธ It's a large rock shelter with two openings. The lower one, #LaCovacha, is a small cave linked with the karst system and was obstructed during the Magdalenian. The upper one, #Cualventi, is located 4m above and provides direct access to the fossil floors of the karst. ๐ค
๐๐Hi friends! to say goodbye in this #Fridaypaleoart to the month of July we are going to visit a small but fascinating cave:
Cave: #Lluera I
Place: San Juan de Priorio (Asturias, Espaรฑa)
Motif: horse, aurochs, deer.
Chronology: #Premagdalenian
โก๏ธWe refer to the Cueva de la Lluera I, a small cave located a few meters from the Nalรณn River (Asturias, Spain) and which was scientifically discovered in 1979 and first studied by Professor Javier Fortea.
๐The artistic activity is found in outdoor areas and in twilight, concentrating on the walls of the left gallery, very close to the entrance.
Welcome to another warm summer morning! ๐๐(or at least that's what we hope!) ๐ค
Today is #FridayPaleoart and we are going to visit a recently discovered site... ๐๐
Cave: #Danbolinzulo
Place: Zestoa, Gipuzkoa
Motif: Red painted and engraved goat
Chronology: #Premagdalenian
โ๏ธThis is a really small cave (with least than 30 meters of development), currently accessed through a small hole in #Ertxiรฑa mountain.
๐ญIt would be interesting to known how was the cave during the Upper Paleolithic. โก๏ธCurrently, there are a lot of blocks and some speleothems.
โ๏ธThe cave is small, but it is very well placed over a narrowing of #Urola valley.
โ๏ธ๐It was known by @Antxieta_Taldea in 1980 when they located some post-paleolithic remains, but in 14th of dec. of 2014, they found red paintings inside, confirmed as paleol. by @MGarcia_Diez.
๐๐Hi! Today is #FridayPaleoart, and instead of a single site, we are going to visit an entire valley!!! #KarrantzaHarana ๐๏ธ
Cave: #ArcoB cave
Place: Pondra, Karrantza river valley, Ramales de la Victoria, Cantabria (Spain)
Motif: Mammoth
Chronology: #Premagdalenian
โก๏ธโ๏ธThe Carranza River is a short river that rises in Karrantza (Bizkaia) and connects with the Asรณn River in Ramales de la Victoria (Cantabria). The Carranza gorge is the only way out of the valley and is characterized by an abrupt karstic orography plenty of caves and shelters.
โ๏ธ๐More than twenty archaeological sites are known (27) although the archaeological information in many cases is deficient. There are 7 decorated caves, 5 in Cantabria and 2 in the Basque Country.
Good Morning! Today is not a #NovemberRain-y day, but it is #FridayPaleoart, so we are going to visit a sheltered place in... โ๏ธ
Cave: #Etxeberri
Place: Camou-Cihigue, Zuberoa, Pays Basque, Nouvelle Aquitaine (France)
Motif: Black bison and red stains
Chronology: #Magdalenian
Etxebarri is a pyrenean cave with #Magdalenian rock art, placed in the beautiful massif of Arbailles, in the hearth of #Zuberoa, #BasqueCountry.
The bison we have presented here is not especially wonderful, but it stands out because of its location deep inside the cave. ๐๐
The rock art is placed 150 meters away from the entrance. It is not a big distance, but one must cross dry lakes, climb dangerous, slippery and steep flowstones, and very narrow crawlways. ๐๐ธ
In Etxeberri, caving security-installation and techniques are really necessary...
