Stoicism is like a mental toolkit.

Here are 11 Stoic lessons/tools I've found to be among the most useful in everyday life.

Thread ๐Ÿ‘‡ Image
1. Bad things will happen, obstacles will present themselves.

It's how we react to them that matters.
2. For every action, ask "Is this necessary?"

Life is too short to waste time on things that don't matter.
3. To feel purpose:

Affect what's within your control.

To feel peace of mind:

Accept what is not.
4. If someone insults you, they harm themselves.

If you react in a negative way, you harm yourself.
5. Helping someone and seeking no reward is incredibly rewarding.
6. Courage isn't the ABSENCE of fear.

It's advancing DESPITE fear.
7. Good character is less about what you say and mostly about what you do.
8. The majority of what makes us anxious about the future never happens.

We suffer more in imagination than in reality.
9. Externals like failure, success, mistakes, rejection and recognition don't change you.

You are still you, with the power to choose how you interpret them.
10. Having few material possessions doesn't make you poor, craving more does.

Appreciate what you already have.
11. One of the best things you can do for others is to be your best self.

Improve a little each day with the virtues of wisdom, justice, courage and self-discipline in mind.

30 short Stoic lessons

from Seneca's first 30 letters.

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
Lay hold of today's task, and you will not need to depend so much upon tomorrow's.

While we are postponing, life speeds by.

(Letter I)
The primary indication of a well-ordered mind is a man's ability

to remain in one place and linger in his own company.

Gratitude

โŒ I have nothing to be grateful for

โœ… I am grateful I woke up today

- Gratitude for just being alive

- Gratitude for breathing in and out

- Some days that's enough, maybe it's enough every day
Comparison

โŒ My friend is achieving more than me

โœ… Life is not a competition

- You're on your path, they're on theirs

- Don't get pulled away from your mission for the sake of someone else's

As part of the upcoming Stoicon-X Women event,

the organisers are inviting you to share your #PathsToFlourishing story.

The conference speakers have already shared their own stories, some of which are in the thread below

Thereโ€™s a cemetary next door to me.

Yes, my neighbours are quiet. I know that Iโ€™ll be just as quiet one day too.

Thatโ€™s not a morbid thought at all.

Muriel Spark said that โ€œthere is no other practice which so intensifies life.โ€

I flourish when I am inside of a book.

I flourish sitting among the 70 meter tall Douglas Fir trees that surround my home.

A long time ago I read Epictetusโ€™ Discourses among those trees and thought: โ€œThis is good stuff.โ€

If, as Epictetus said, most "entertainment"

only exploits people's weaknesses,

what are the Stoic alternatives?

Here are some ideas ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Walk

๐—š๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜€:

โ€œWe ought to take outdoor walks,

to refresh and raise our spirits by deep breathing in the open air.โ€

- Seneca, On Peace of Mind 17.8
2. Exercise

๐—š๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ:

โ€œIndulge the body just so far as suffices for good health.

It needs to be treated somewhat strictly to prevent it from being disobedient to the spirit."

- Seneca, Epistles 8.5

I used to worry A LOT about:

- Past mistakes
- Future outcomes
- Opinions of others

Stoicism hasn't eliminated worry

but it has enabled me to deal with worries rationally.

Here are the "tactics" that have been most useful to me
๐Ÿ‘‡
Thread summary:

1. Cognitive distancing
2. Decatastrophizing
3. Accepting Fate
4. Preparing
5. Reminders

๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Cognitive Distancing

Stoicism teaches us to separate

our value judgements from outside events,

our thoughts from reality.

A number of practices can help with this.
